Help with removing ralley gauges 73 cuda
« on: February 10, 2009 - 10:19:02 PM »
Sooooo. I will need to get a tach to replace the one missing on my ralley dash and repair the speedo needle. Can anyone give me info on how to remove the cluster? What is the best shop manual for my car?
Thanks in advance!
Don

Here's a page out of the '70 manual.  Lower the steering column with the two 7/16 nuts.  Cover the column with a towel and tape it in place.  Remove the light bar screws.  Remove the black screws holding the cluster.   Remove the speedo cable from underneath.  Before trying to wiggle the cluster out (and it is a tight fit on the sides) I recommend putting some tape on the two mating woodgrain edges so they don't get (more) scratched. Once it's loose, you can disconnect the wires from above.

some tips:
if you have a nicle covered dash the thickness of the padding can disturb pulling out the bezels
it's easy to scratch the woodgrain while removing the switch panel
don't be afraid of applying some light force
check twice that you removed all screws :)
when installing back align light tubes with bezel before putting gauges into the dash
everybody must do it for the first time  8)

Disconnect the battery. Take off the light bar and flip it up onto your dashpad. Remove switch pod first. Even after you take the screws off the gauge pod, you will have to get your hand behind it to remove the wires. They don't give you much room to play with.

...Oops, I kind of forgot a step. You will need to remove the speedo cable from the gauge pod before you try to take it out. There is a plastic clip on the end that you have to squeeze.
