Looks to be either way out there or actually the one playing with Daves mind. Dont really know what to think about Paul Shafer laughing. He is about the biggest freak I have ever seen, cant sing, cant play the keyboard yet he has had firm employment as the monkey to Davids organ grinder routine.

He is playing it up to sell his movie. He is talking of retirement and looks a little Heath Ledger-ish. If people think it is the last work he is going to do they are going to flock to the theaters.
Nothing more. Oh yeah, and he's always been a user of the "good stuff". No secret there.

oh?
i dunno about all the supposed publicity hes trying to gain. guys a dope, said he was gonna be a musician, and granted, in walk the line, there were  some pretty impressive displays. but to be that incoherant? c'mon, i know lots of folks with less notariety who can swing a better angle.

farrah fawcett had a similiarly poor experiance on daves gig, didnt seem to bolster her career, and i'd much rather see her than sqawquin anyday!!

Fun or not, David is just a Advertising arena for his "guests". I don't think it's an act myself. If you've seen this due at red carpet events and what not he is very, very mellow and down to earth, not a show boating like, ah, example: P-Diddy or someone who hogs camera so I can't see him doing a stunt like this and also risk losing face. Apparently Joaquin doesn't like the show much or being on it, hence the 3 year period to come back on again. Forced Hollywood PR stuff + drugs could easily equal that awkward moment we just saw. Like others, this is only a hypothesis. But, being as how that show, Hollywood and the corny business is, being a publicity stunt could be plausible.

Sad but funny.  Just hope for his family's sake he does not end up like his older brother, River,  dead of an OD in front of some night club...
