Identifying transmission type?
« on: February 16, 2009 - 04:44:11 PM »
Hey Guys,

My Chally was originally a 318, but someone swapped it out for a 383 prior to my ownership. The problem is, I do not know what type of torqflite it has. I'm assuming a727 because it's a big block, but the people that had it prior were kind of Mopar nomads, and had done a lot of makeshift things to the vehicle. Are there any easy ways to identify what type I have?

It's a 3spd automatic on the column. I did crawl underneath and did see the number 433 very large on the passenger side near the bell housing. There were some other numbers as well which were hard to read but I can post if it will help in figuring out what I have. Thanks!

James

They never made a 904 for a BB so it has to be a 727 if it's a 3 speed.  :2thumbs:

Ok cool,

I just didn't know if it would have been possible that someone jerry rigged a 904 on there somehow! Thanks.

Never say never. With a different drive shaft, you might still have the 904. A pic of your tranny pan will tell the story. The 904 and 727 were shaped differently.

A 904 will not bolt up to a big block.

Here are the pics:

Based on a Car Craft article I found that has a pictures of the two different gaskets for the tranny pan, it appears that it is indeed a 727, to my eyes at least. Thanks!

If you ever find a 904 behind a big block it's probably worth a bunch of $$$ on Ebag.

The "hump" on the pan by the filler tube hole is always a sure fire way to tell a 727.

Years ago in Stock eliminator we use to take a 904 and modifiy the case with a little body work and some creative welding and pieces from the big trans too make it look like it was a 727. Was illegal , a few of us guys got away with it for a long time. It was like .15 plus quicker than the 727.
As long as you didn't have to drop the pan or take the trans out of the car in front of them they would never catch it... ;)

Years later NHRA changed the rules and you were allowed to run the (legal) 904.

I may have some photos somewhere of that trick trans..

I've heard of that before. :grinyes: It dawns on me now that's where the blanket statement .15 improvement for a 904 originated.

Out of curiosity, has anyone here ever carded a 1.85 60ft time with a SB/727 with a stock convertor??   :clueless:

Not really a stock converter but 10".  I made 1.46s/ 60feet with a blower small block and 727. 1500rpm launch rpm holding with brakes.
