Parking Wipers
« on: June 04, 2004 - 09:28:54 AM »
I'm planning on getting the Chally out in the next few weeks, and since I had a new wiper motor installed, the wipers don't 'park' beneath the hood.  They stick up over the chrome moulding, and when they are on, the tip of the blade goes past the A pillar.  I assume that I have to remove the plastic mesh plate at the base of the wind screen, but how do I park the wipers?  Is there a nut that I can loosen, move the wipers manually, then tighten again?  Adjusting the wipers on a Neon is SO simple, but the Chally is a mystery.

Help?

In the past i've turned them on, let them travel to the driver's side limit, cut power, remove then reinstall the driver's side so that it's just short of the A pillar. Next, same on the passenger side using the rest point for the wiper on the bottom windshield molding as the passenger side limit. 'Course the wiper arm removal tool helps.  ::)

thanks.  so now the question is, how do I remove (then reinstall) the wiper?  As per your post, there is a special tool required for this, other than a ratchet set??  Goodness, learn somethin new every day.

Could you please detail?

The tool is designed to lift straight up so that the splines are not damaged. Year One has a picture of it (item T81) on page 78 of thier B/E catalog. It's basically a teeny tiny pry bar in pliers form with a pad on the bottom to protect the surface being leveraged against. The key whether using the tool or another means is to pull as straight up as possible. Glad to help  :)

Is the wiper motor the correct one?

The park switch is keyed in different position on the gear housing. If all you did was change the motor I would assume the problem to be in the motor if the linkage was fine before. I'm also assuming you have a 3spd wiper motor.

I am having a similiar problem with my car. The wipers have worked fine untill just recently. I was in a shower and had to use the wipers , when i shut them off they will not return to the hidden position ??? They stay up on the windshield about 3 inches. I took off the screen and manually returned them to hidden position. Then tryed them and same result, they dont retract all the way. What needs to be replaced, as something must be recked. ??

When I had that problem, it was determined that the motor was bad, so I installed a new motor and it worked fine . . . wipers parked with no problems!  ;)  ;D  ;D

add me to the list, my wipers dont park either. The travel and sweep seems to be ok. The best I can do is shut them off as close to parked as possible. So this isnt likely to be an adjustment issue? probably new motor?

Wonder what that will set me back?  :???:

the park switch on the motor is brken or has been bent inside the housing.

when you look at the motor- on the very front of it is two wires soldered to the terminals- this is the park switch.

When you turn off the wipers the motor actually reverses and a special cam inside the  motor will keep the motor running until it opens the park switch and shuts the motor off.

ok, take a look at the pic of this and see what you think? How large a gap should there be on the contacts?

This is a link to the wiper motor instructions I posted some time ago. Maybe this can help.
