Look at any photo of stock heads. Like this '67 closed chamber 440 head. The area around the valve seat is machined flat.

Rappa 440,  Thanks for the picture and information.  I'll pull a valve and see what I find.

Well Roppa wins the gold star!!  Removed an exhaust valve and there is no seat in there.  Attached a couple of pictures however I'm not sure how well they show that there is no seat.  Guess I'll just run lead additive in the gas.  Probably won't drive it more than a couple thousand miles, if that many, each year anyway.  Thanks for all the advice.

Definatly no seat , I would look into the cost to do them though seeing as the heads are off now , you could open them up to 1.81 while you are at it

Good point,  I'll do that.   If they opened them up, wouldn't that involve all new valves too?

If your looking for more flow with larger valves, consider some port work on your big block heads following David Vizard's 3 part article in Mopar Muscle Magazine.  He comments on what valve sizes work, and debunks some myths on BB mopar oem heads.  You could do the work yourself, just take your time and measure often.

Part one: A Study Of The Flow Characteristics Of Stock, Big-Block Cylinder Heads

Part two:  Intake Ports, Seats, and Combustion Chamber Mods

Part three:  Grinding On Big-Block Exhaust Ports Garners Big Gains

 D. Vizard has written many good performance books.   Air flow is airflow.  Excellent reading is his book:
