Well, guess what I did this weekend...
« on: February 23, 2009 - 11:16:42 AM »
My first ever motor swap!

I don't remember if I mentioned on here that my buddy was selling me the motor from his 2001 Stratus Coupe-turned-show-car that got ruined by a deer a few months ago.  Well this weekend I went up to Shinglehouse, PA (literally, middle of nowhere...) and with the help of one of his friends, the three of us swapped the engines.

The biggest hurdle was separating the motor and trans with this slip-style manual tranny.  Spent nearly 2 hours trying to figure out how to separate his units, and 2 seconds separating mine.  I kept my tranny because it just recently got a new clutch and pressure plate, synthetic fluid, etc.

Started it Friday night, finished Sunday morning, drove it 330 miles home that afternoon!  It might not be a COOL project like a 318-to-440 build, but for my first-ever motor swap, I'm still kinda excited that we got it done.

I'd take pictures, but it's basically the same motor, plus some "colorized additions" that he did for show purposes - red silicon vacuum hoses, a painted valve cover (only one 'cause the rear one is buried under the intake plenum...) etc.

Way to go.   Glad it all turned out good and you got to drive it home.  I can not even remember the first time I changed an engine out done so many of them over the years.  It can be fun when everything goes right.   :2thumbs:
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

Jeff,

  Why did you swap engines?

Congrats for making a post with saying Viper.   :clapping:   :stirpot:

You mean "without"?

Congrats on screwing up your own joke.  :)

My Stratus has 112,000 miles on it.  His motor had 30,000.  My engine was still good, but I had it in the shop not too long ago and they wanted $500 to replace some injector o-rings.  A week later my buddy calls me and offers his engine for $450.  Duh.

I paid him $500, he tossed in his radiator, some motor mounts, a few switches and spare interior parts, some new electrical modifications, and the gauge cluster which stores the mileage.

And really, I did it for the experience.  I thought it'd be fun.  I was only partially correct - sweating bullets for the 5-and-a-half-hour drive home wasn't fun, but ultimately nothing really went wrong.

So there.  :)

WTG :clapping: :woohoo:   I'm sure it was a PITA, but sounds like the final result was very rewarding.  You couldn't go wrong.

Cool.  Congrats on getting it right, too.

I did a clutch in my Stealth, and it was suprisingly not too bad of a swap, once you figure it out!

And, is that not illegal to swap guage cluster?  I mean, your car does does have 113,000 on it.  Just wondering the rules about that stuff...   :clueless:

Is it a scam if I never sell it?

I mean I really didn't think of it from that angle - I don't want to do it to "scam."  I want it to show the proper mileage so that I know what maintenance is needed next.

Now, the scam would be swapping back to my original cluster every year at inspection time so that it only shows a difference of 10-20 miles from the previous year, thus making me exempt from the required state inspections...  not that I considered doing THAT at all...

I was kinda wondering on more feedback on this, 'cause I'm thinking about swapping out the dash this afternoon - it only takes maybe 20 minutes.

Like I said I have no intention of selling the car - I want to know what the mileage is on the new motor.

Thoughts?

If your installing the original dash cluster, wouldn't it have the original mileage of that engine right on it? 30k?

the mileage on that new motor starts at 112,000 miles  :poopoke:

I would worry about getting cought  :nono: if your vin number is recorded at some service center at 112 k and now it showes up with 30k in some data base from a service center can you say red flag  :22yikes:

 :villagers:

good luck

ps: delete this thred if you change it over and never tell anyone.  :sly:

Jeff, if I were you, I'd just take note of the current mileage on your original dash (112,XXX) so you'll know when the swap was completed.  I know you want to be able to keep track of the mileage on the different engine, but the odometer is also there to show the mileage on the vehicle's chassis, not just the miles the engine has acquired.

and if lets say 2 years down the road you do decide to sell it, you added miles so even putting the old dash back in would be unreal miles. Odometer allways tells the cars miles not any mods such as eng or tranny ect. ect. I know that if a dealer does it it is odometer tampering and is illegal, dont know about private owned cars though, either way good luck.
