YAY! HISTORY On My M28
« on: February 24, 2009 - 04:40:20 PM »
I finally was able to get in touch with the previous owner of my '71 Challenger and here is the information he gave me.

Chris,

Looks like you've done an awful lot of work so far taking the car apart. Unfortunately.. for us both.. almost all the photo's I had of the car/kids/family were lost in a move several years back.
I only have this one left. I do have a video on VCR tape of me driving it from my wedding in 1987. If I can get the conversion stuff working I'll try to get you a clip of that.
My dad bought it for me around 1982-83 for $125 from one of his friends. It was in somewhat better shape than you got it. But had all the same rust problems. It was Blue with a rotted white vinyl top, regular flat hood and seats all ripped to shreds by animals or something. Water had been collecting under the vinyl. That's were all the rot around the windows came from. At the time I thought bondo fixed everything and did some really shoddy bodywork that covered problem areas while letting them get worse. (I just didn't know any better back then.)  It had a 318 with two barrel carb and I think a 904 automatic transmission. The passenger side door handle was broken of by one of my girl friends who kept yanking on it while it was locked for some reason. My uncle made the current one that's on it at a machine shop he worked at. The steering wheel and hood came of an RT I bought just for those two parts. Again, in retrospect I should have kept the original RT and fixed it up... 20/20 hindsight and all. The current transmission that is in it I'm pretty sure I pulled from a dodge Demon. The coils that are around the rear shocks are there more because of weak leaf springs than anything else.. It sags on one side.

That's great Chris. Maybe his dad has some more info on his friend that he bought it from. It would be great to find the original owner! Pretty cool piece of Mopar history!! :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

Can you imagine buying a car for $125?   :sly:  I know it was early '80's, but still.  What a find.

Thats a good idea Matt, I'll make sure that I ask him, I have a few other questions about the car as well, but I already knew that he didn't know what a fender tag was (asked when I picked it up) :misbehaving:

Great pictures! I've been in contact with the last owner of my car and he took no pictures of it...although, he only had it for a year or so. However, I also got in contact with the second owner. The guy said he'd email me pictures on 2 DIFFERENT occasions but never sent them. I'm gonna end up either going to his house or phoning and saying "whats YOUR email address".
