small block build questions
« on: February 28, 2009 - 01:22:18 PM »
I'm weighing some options on a small block build and looking for your thoughts. My main concerns are reliablity and streetability. Would a a stroker motor using a new R3 mopar block, the heads in the thread below, hydraulic roller cam and fuel injected 6 pack make for a good streetable engine that is also reliable and produce a minimum of 500 hp?

Oh and probably Eagly rods and crank (unless someone reccomends a better alternative), and JE pistons.

I can`t see any reliability problems , the combo may not be the cheapest way to go but you are using good parts , cam would be the limiting factor IMO

Thanks I started doing some parts searches and have discovered that I can't find a hydraulic roller that is aggressive as i would like so i would probably at that point go solid roller which should remove that weak point. The cost of the build definitely not cheap I am probably looking at a good 15k to build this engine, but I think it would probably be the last engine I would ever have to put in my car.

Try Cam Motion. They will do a custom grind for you. Just give them the engine, drivetrain, tire size, rear end specs ect.  A lot less maintenance on a hyd roller than a solid lift cam.

You don't need much cam to make 500hp with a stroker SB. A hydraulic cam would do the job and require no maintenance other than oil additive for the lifters.

I kind of figured that 500 in a stroker would be pretty easy considering 425 out of a relatively mild 340 isn't too difficult. The main thing is I want something that when it's done I don't have to worry about it or mess with it all the time.

I think the factory stroker uses the old .509" cam. One of the healthier Engle grinds would work fine. Chryco can give you a good grind #
I recommend the Victor Intake. It has plenty of meat to port if you port the heads, which I also recommend for a stroker. The RPM Intake is too thin for those heads. The TTI W-2 headers should be on your shopping list too because normal SB headers have a bad mismatch with the exhaust ports after they are ported. They should bolt right on and line up fine. :2cents:

Go 471 stroker from here for $5k, http://speedomotive.com/ps-615-73-speed-o-motive-uber-block-assembled-custom-short-block.aspx

Get some B1-BA heads from Koffel, http://www.b1heads.com/B-1Heads.asp

Add in a few other pieces and you have plenty more than 500 horses for under $10k.

Sorry but I want a small block. I have had small blocks and big blocks and prefer the small block. Haven't had a stroker yet though (small or big block).

You should check out Mancini's Chrysler engineering sale, lots of race engines/blocks for sale, couple of aluminum race blocks on there...
