most of the time it'll work fine, but for better results let the car run with the heater and defrost on for a good 30 minutes or park it out in the sun if you're in florida :cooldancing:

well i had to sharpen and make it thinner and it only worked in  a straight line then i had to still use the utility knife and a sharpened putty knife i was really paranoid about breaking a 35 yr old winshield but after lets just say a few hours i got the front one out  :woohoo: i started trimming the back windows sealer but will finish tomorrow. stefan it finally got into the 50s up here thats why i decided to finally try it i dont have heat in that barn i should of put this in my resto thread its on my 73. thanks cp i did take my time and it went pretty good.

wow!,few hours?  well atleast you got it out in one piece, though I'd probably would not try to save a windshield that old, cause usually they tend to turn milky around the edges, plus a new one can be had for around $150, props to you for getting it out without breaking at that temperature

Glad you got it out in one piece.  I will use one of those again to take mine out along with the rear window.  I am replacing the windshield because mine is really bad someone broke it in the past.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

I hope it works better than what I did...

Safety wire wrapped around two box end wrenches!!!   :faint:

It worked but it was tough.

What works really well is old guitar or piano strings.  I've done it myself, but it is even faster with two people.  Just in case you ever do it again...

If you have a Harbor Freight store close by, they sell windshield wire.  With a nice long roll, I was able to do the front and back myself. Always pull at a horizontal angle. If you pull at the wrong angle, the glass chips along the edges.

We used guitar string.  It worked well, but when we got to the final corner managed to put a nice crack across the windshield.   :banghead:

:woo: got the front and back out without breaking, couple small nicks but the glass is in really good shape no funky stuff along the edge, the factory tinting is really good.i cant believe how good the caulk was, still tacky would have lasted 100yrs i think.

Make sure that you install with the same type of sealer. The new urethanes for airbags harden like a rock. They want the windshield to stay in there for backstop in the even of airbag deployment.

Very easy to crack the glass by pulling up with that little tool.  I've cracked many myself by trying to rush the job. One thing about a long wire is that you can stand on the opposite side of the car while "sawing" the sealer from under the glass. You can also do it by yourself without another person helping you.  That way there is no one else to blame when it cracks.

I got a little cocky, I did the back glass in like 5 minutes, so I thought the front would be easy too.  I tried to put the tool under the bottom, bad mistake.  Not enough room so I tried to force it a little, I guess the little was too much.
