I have used weed eater string several times with good results.  It tends to lessen the edge chipping compared to wire.

I wish I saw this topic in time.  I pull tons of glass at work. I have used so many things wire, the "windshield knife" that you posted a pic of,long shaft urathane knife and the excaliber (sp) but nothing works as good as the inductive coil units. A bunch of companies make them and we were able to rent one for a week for $100 to see if it would be worth buying. It was.  With 2 people you can have a windsheild out in 15minn or less.

Can you post a pic of the inductive coil unit? Probably heats that urethane up till its nice and soft.

Yes I will when I get home from work.  That is what it what it does. BUT misuse will burn paint off to. Also some of the tools have attachments such as  bolt heaters,moulding removers and dent remover/metal shrinker.  The one we have is called the "Inductor" http://www.theinductor.com/index.php?m=5&s=0&d=3&ds=0&prod=11
