Stuck Oil Filter

What are your tricks?  Before I poke it full of holes.

It is pretty tight and it is crushing the filter.

Hammer and chisel on the bottom edge close to the mounting surface. Or a very large set of channel locks in the same place. Once you move it around 1/4 inch, it should spin free

If it's that stuck trying to "stab" it won't work well either, the filter skin is thin and will just cause a mess.
The best I' have come across is to try and keep pressure near the base of the filter where the filter is strongest.

use a good oil filter wrench, failing that punch a screw driver right through and turn?

I have used a chain wrench with pretty good success and even used a large aluminum handled pipe wrench where I had the space. Driving a large screwdriver through it is messy, but usually works also. The best for me has been the chain wrench!! :2thumbs:

Tomorrow, I will try again.  :pullinghair:  I am to tired and cold to keep working tonight.  :sadwavey:

I will move the wrench up as far as I can.  It's very difficult to get leverage on it. If all else fails, it’s time to cut it up.

Oh yeah, it on a 70 barracuda with a 318.

1.  If you can get your hand on it, try using those thin rubbery things that you use to take a jar lid off with.  It gives you great non-slip turning power.

2.  If your filter has flutes on the end, use the end cap that fits over it with a ratchet.  I know the Motorcraft filters I use on my truck and car have the flutted ends.  With this type of wrench (end cap style) you never, ever, crush the sides of the filter like the other types of wrenches tend to do.

It off.   :jumping:

I had to slide the wrench all the way to the top of the filter and get at it from the top to get the leverage to loosen it.

Even better news, is she turns over and wants to start.  Now I have to put the fuel tank back in and she will be running again.  :clapping:  :woo:

That's good news, I worked a Goodyear and can't tell you how many times I had to peel the sheet metal off and use a chisel to get the base off.  When they say 3/4 turn after contact, they mean it!
