XV level one suspension
« on: March 09, 2009 - 08:36:28 PM »
Anybody running the XV level one suspension?
I have an opportunity at buying the complete level one set up at a real good price.
So I thought I'd ask mostly about the shocks being non adjustable and set up for there matched set.
How is it?

No personal experience with their kits, but the feedback from level 1 owners that have installed them are that they love them. They do seem to provide the best all around suspension set up for a multi-use car. Are they the best, well, that depends on what you want to use them for. They are a bit light for serious autocross, they are a big heavy for serious drag use, but for handling, manners, comfort and ease of installation, it probably is the best stock based set up out there.

Since they developed their spring and shock rates on a four post rig, they were able to specifically match the necessary shock valving to their specific wheel rates. This is a luxury very few of us will ever have which is why for the average enthusiast, adjustable shocks are a much better way to go. Will their shocks work for rates outside of their specified amounts, sure, but they won't be optimal for the application.

It appears that their shocks are made by Afco. If you have the motivation, you can always contact Afco, discuss your spring selection with them, and get a fixed valve shock that is pretty darn close to optimal. They also offer adjustable shocks if you have the coin to drop on them ($400+ each).

I have the level one suspension.   I didnt care for the rear springs they was no curve in them at all. Completly flat when the car was on the ground.  And the rear shocks had like 1 inch of travel before they bottomed out.  I ended up going with mopar springs to get a bit more lift.   I will probably get a custom rear spring to bring the rear up 1 or 2 more inches.  The car does handle much nicer.  But i still need to go with the bigger rims and rubber when the budget allows

For the best hanlding performance you should have a spring with no arch in it. The more arch you add to a spring, the more side loading leverage the car can exert on it.  By side loading a leaf, you reduce the twisting force applied to the spring, which reduces the natural tendency of a leaf to resist body roll. This is why mopar's oval track springs are only available with 0 or 1 inch of arch.

I don't think I'd pay >$1k for it.  Seems overpriced for what you get.

I wish  I would have thought of this three years ago before I bought my suspension from pst. I'll probably just change the rear leafs to the Mopar brand and add stiffning add ons. I can't think of the name

Yes, you can put together a comparable package for less than what they charge if you shop around. But, if you do get comparable quality, adjustable shocks, those alone will put you up to around $800, in which case their deal that is dialed in and ready to bolt on does not look so bad.

Well they told me the same thing that a flat spring gives the best handeling.  But on the roads up here in Manitoba i dont much for cleaning my exhaust off on every bump.   If you guys get a chance to see xv video of the level one car .  There is no way that car has flat springs.  The fender lip is above the rear tire.  Watch the video and you will see what i mean.

so do you still have the springs from the kit?  Interested in selling them? :canada:

I would have thought there were some owners of the kit that would pipe up as well!

The rear springs are Mopar heavy duty replacements you get from Mopar performance parts.
I wasn't impressed with the rear sway bar, I would have preferred the rear bar from Firm Feel.
The shocks look pretty good and I bet thats what will do the most at keeping me under control.
I have to recharge my shocks tho, does anyone know about nitrogen?
I know that guys use it in tires, so I was thinking it should be easy to get.

If you know anyone that works on airplanes, they could charge your shocks for you.  All airplane tires and oleos have nitrogen in them
