Hack Job Pictures
« on: March 09, 2009 - 09:14:55 PM »
I know a lot of these cars we own were worked on by hackers. And I don't mean the computer type of hackers. These people amaze me with their lack of craftmanship.

This is my car before I replaced the quarter panel.

Anyone else have hacker pics to share?

lots of foam, bondo, and silicone caulk. I will say it looked great before we stripped it and held up very well since it had been painted well over 10 years ago.

Here's a plastic surgeon job.

He used so much heat to braze the dutchman it warped then drooped
Whoops...no problem just add more mud.

i found some fancy work on one of my quarters when i went to tidy up a rough patch.
the rear corner above the bumper had a piece of tin drilled with holes and riveted on.
and a dirty great big patch along the bottom of the quarter. all this was artfully covered with a huge mountain of filler.

i welded the riveted piece on and patched a couple of holes, and filled it back up. i'm replacing the quarters sometime so doesn't matter.
fills me with hope of what i'll find when i do strip the car though...   ha ha ha

A mate who didn't know anything much about body work bought a chevy when he was in America a couple of years ago because it looked great. When he got it back to Australia somebody pointed out that most panels had a lot of bog (bondo) in the panels. Somebody filled the rear panels with bog and stuck new 1/4 panels over the top   :22yikes:  At least he had 2 new panels to fit when everything was cleaned off.   :villagers:

We did similar things back in the day. The '73 had the normal rust in the rear quarter so we just took a gallon of bondo and a couple of newspapers......

Couple of years later the  patch came off on guadelupe road in one piece right in front of the high school.  Smashed on the ground like a ceramic plate   :smilielol:

Pretty embarassing at the time

My buddy bought a Challenger convertible project and took it to a local restoration shop that he said had a good reputation.  He gave them a 5K deposit.  Less than a year later the place called him up and said they were going out of business and he needed to retrieve his car back, and that the 5K would cover the work they had done so far.
They had semi-installed 2 Goodmark quarters and done some work in the trunk but not much else I could see.  I was really amazed at how they had installed the quarters.  It looks like they had glued the new quarters on top of the old quarters with some sort of epoxy and used pop rivets to hold the quarters in place while the epoxy set!
I also noticed they had used bondo to patch holes in the rear wheel well and even on the rear frame rails!
He was lucky to get the car out of there, if this shop had completed the restoration the car probably would have broken apart the first time he drove over a railroad crossing or hit a pothole!!  I feel bad he got screwed out of his 5K though.

ohh.. i wish i could find the flat head screw driver that was used as a shim in the original springs....they didn't even bother to cut the whole handle off.. just half of it...

but that was just the tip of the iceberg...

what are people thinking?! i'm willing to bet my 6 year old nephew could do a better job

like topcat said.. join the club..

You would not believe some I have seen and worked on and then had to repair.  Sorry that everyone dont fix it right.   I have worked in body work for almost 40 years now and it is hard to believe how many people dont fix things right.  I know in the past that parts were not available but makes it easier now to fix them right.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development
