Where can I find the proper paint mix?
« on: March 15, 2009 - 03:37:36 AM »
Where can I find the proper paint mix for GY8 Gold Metallic?  I need to give my painter my final answer with regards to color and I am leaning away from FC7.  But, I want to make sure he gets the color right.  I don't wan't the color to come looking flat or off shade.

Thanks

When doing our Cuda the concern we had was to land the proper shade, and a big help was that my Mom's neighbor is a PPG supplier (as well as a car guy ) and was telling us that all the colors can be mixed using today's better paints (color with clear as opposed to just enamels) and they can match the color codes - for example, we only had to tell him we were looking for Limelight, that it was a color offered on the Barracuda lines, and then he was able to mix a proper match.

So then my understanding is any good paint shop should be able to give you the proper color mix especially if it is a color that was originally offered by a car maker.

We did a Challenger in FC7 and got a Dupont mix from Finishmaster for the engine compartment, trunk, and door jambs. We got two separate quarts that were exactly the same hue.  We had a pro paint the outside of the car and he used Sherwin-Williams.  His paint was spot-on to the original paint we found inside the doors whereas our Dupont looked kind of grey and lifeless next the S-W paint. We really like the exterior color of the car, but aren't happy with the Dupont paint we sprayed.  I've since heard that they have two different codes for FC7 (it was C7 in their computer), the other one being more red, but I don't know if that's true.  You're smart to be concerned and asking around, because the dealers will tell you confidently that their paint will be dead-on, but you won't know until it's too late.
