Replacing the steering shaft coupler
« on: March 15, 2009 - 02:59:37 PM »
I've got an old 392 Hemi in my '73 Cuda with VERY little clearance on both sides of the engine bay. I could not use after market headers, so I had to utilized the original cast iron exhaust manifolds. The steering coupler rubs against the manifold. I've heard that I could use steering U-joints. If this is true which could I use to as a direct replacement for the the coupler. Thanks guys in advance!!!

Flaming river & other hot rod suppliers have a short shaft with 2 U joints to allow the shaft to sit out if the way ,Lokar has them as well I believe . You will have to modify the column / shorten it to get this to work as well . You need to have custom headers built for the 392 in an E body as it was never designed to fit it

ive never done it but if you know anyone that races circle track and or builds race cars they could do it easily,we could take it to 3 or 4 guys shops in this area and get it done quickly, look around your area or call a local race track im sure they would be glad to help.make sure theyve done it before with 2 or more ujoints and or a heim involved you dont want it to bind.
