factory rear tie down brackets
« on: March 15, 2009 - 07:34:36 PM »
What was the original color of the factory tie down brackets that were bolted to the rear frame rails just behind the rear axle?  Also, what color were the bolts for these backets?  We are restoring a 70 chally convertible if it makes a difference.

Thanks,

Brian

They were on the car when it went through the dip process, so gray like the underside of the car. Apply  undercoating to them also if the car is coded for it.

OE they were unpainted.
There is a spray you can put on that prevents flash rusting. Not WD 40.
Or... paint with cast iron grey. Yes undercoating was on some.

Take a look at this thread if you're restoring for points.

They were dipped eh Barry? Grey was hard to discern if dipped or not.

Yep. I just cleaned one of mine up for this photo, you can see remains of the gray from the dip around the edges;

Wrong one, that shows the under coating, this one shows the gray;

Those were only supposed to be bolted?
I realized mine were tacked in a few places with weld after I scraped off the undercoating :clueless:

Thanks for the replies.  Yes, I have followed the thread on moparts about Dave's fantastic car.  That car is a thing of beauty.  Hell, I'd be scared to drive it.  As much as we would love to get our chally up to "that level", we plan on driving the car a lot too so we are just hoping to have a correct appearing car with items that would be natural steel be painted steel color and such.

On a similar note, what color would the bolts have been?  Probably zinc phosphate?  Or would they have been dipped primer since the tie downs were on the car prior to it being dipped.

They would show gray also since they were installed when the chassis was dipped.
