Discouraging weekend (long & whiney)
« on: June 14, 2004 - 10:30:00 PM »
This was a tough weekend as far as making progress on the car. I'm starting to feel like I'm going backwards.

First off, the roof that I just stripped a couple of weeks ago to get rid of some nasty surface rust is already rusting through the primer again. Working outside sucks, but it's the only thing I have right now.

Then I tried fixing the joint between the roof and the rear quarter (where the seam is leaded) by stripping it down then filling over the seam. But for some reason the filler wouldn't stick to the lead -- it just kept peeling off every time I tried to sand it down. I tried about 3 times thinking it might have been because I was working in the sun or something, but each time it would just peel off of the lead. So now I have filler that's nicely feathered on either side, with a section down the middle where the filler is torn out.

Then I tried to make some progress on straightening out the passenger door. After sanding it down, I found a dent that was filled in with about 3/8" of bondo. Perfect opportunity to try out my new cheapo stud welder. It worked pretty well -- only problem is the metal is so stretched that it popped out too far, then when I tried to tap down the high spot it collapsed back in to where it started. And I can't get at it from inside because of the door beam. So it seems like I'm left with filling it back in with a God-awful amount of plastic, or pulling it out again and living with a high spot.   :-\

I'm feeling like I'm never going to get there. I know the easiest thing to do is just run through a quick hack job that will get me through a year or two with a 20/20 car (looks good from 20 feet away going 20 miles an hour) until it starts rusting again. But then I feel like if I'm going to go to all this trouble I might as well do it right and get it over with. Then I have a weekend like this one and I get frustrated. After all, if it's not fun why do it, right?

Anyone care to check in with some encouraging words, horror stories of your own, etc? This weekend I'm going to scope it out and decide if I should just do a "slap it together and take it to Maaco" so I can drive it and get some fun out of it (I haven't driven it in the 5 years I've owned it.) Then in a few years when I (hopefully) have a better place to work on it,I'll take my time and do a better job. Does that really happen? Or is it like the "I'm only going to take a year off then I'll go back to college" thing? One thing I'm sure of: I'm not going to get rid of it. Anytime I get really discouraged I just fire it up and that obnoxious V8 sound reminds me of why I bought it  :)

Sorry for the whine, I'm just in one of those "long project that's not going smoothly" ruts...

Well man, don't give up on doing a good job because then like you already said, you'll end up doing something again that you'd only want to do once.  I've had some rough nights out in the garage, and I've decided the only way to correct the problem is to go in and take a small break....Then when you're rested or have a better idea about how to approach the problem area, return to the garage and start tackling the task again. ;)  It's always worked for me so far, so best of luck to ya! ;D

This is just my opinion but I would go the Maaco route right now.  Get it looking good and have some fun with it.  Five years is a long time to look in the yard and wish it was done.   If you know you're never getting rid of it, wait until you have a better place and bettrer tools for the job.  Then when you're doing it you can think about the good times you had in it earlier to keep you motivated. ::)

I'd take a little break on that part of the car... go work on something else until you feel like you're ready to try it again... usually, a clear head will provide better results to the end product!! ;)

Good luck and keep us posted!

Cuda340-73,

I know how you feel.  I have to work outside too.  It's taking me weeks / months just to install a new cam & intake because of the weather.  As for the car, I agree with LB ( how can I say that ? ) work on a different part of it and the progress there will help your outlook.  Not to mention, by the time that is done, someone here will probably have a solution to your rust and filler problems.

Hang tough,

Working outdoors is tough.  >:(

On the roof seam, I think you are going to have to melt out the lead and start over. A propane torch may do the trick for you. Heat up the lead and scoop it out and off with a paint stick. Fill the seam with "All Metal".

Surface rust through the primer means that you used the wrong primer. Strip and/or sand the primer off, prep the metal again, and prime it with a water-tight epoxy primer. Some primers are porous and will let moisture through.

On the door, you'll either have to get a shrinking disk to shrink the metal or use the torch method to shrink the metal. Get a spoon dolly that will allow you to get a backing plate behind that door brace. It's a bear to work inside that door, but it can be done.

Here are a couple of websites you can check out for body work tips:

Hang in there!
Good Luck!

Yep I have to agree with most of your replys except the Maaco part.  Take a break and think about it.  Mistakes are all part of the learning process, and everyone makes them!

If all else fails, trailer the car to Georgia and have reflection7 finish the bodywork for you!!  ;)

I know the good weather is here and it would be great to be driving but take your time. If you intend to keep the car you will never be happy with "good enough for now". You will become completely discouraged. Plus if you leave these areas now you will have trouble trying to match paint later when the repiars are doen righit. So you spend more money doing a full paint.
If you feel the repair is beyond your experience level then take it to a professional. The door is easy enough to remove and as for the lead as Steve says a propane torch will provide enough heat to melt the lead. Then a bit of filing will remove the remainder.

Thanks for the ideas, everyone. I'm going to try to get back to it Saturday with a fresh outlook and keep at it. I think you guys are right -- I'll forget about the door for now and focus on the pillar. If I can get that squared away, I'll feel like I at least accomplished something.

Buck up little camper!  ;D

Here's a shot of my quarter panel roof line before and after removing the lead with a torch. Once you get to this point, clean the area with a drill powered wire brush, treat the area with some rust nuetralizer, paint the area with POR15 or something similar, and fill with all metal. Make sure that the all metal will be compatible with the POR15, I don't know that the two will work well together.

If it were all easy, everyone would do it. Keep pushing it on. If you're getting tired of body work, do some other type of work on the car.

Already a lot of good suggestions but I`ll add my two cents. You definitly need a primer that is not porous like laquer is.If you don`t know how to shrink metal take off the door and have a body shop do it for you and then finish it yourself as you can do more damae than good if you screw it up.I`m a pretty good bodyman and stretched panels can frustrate meKeep at it,I`ve been there and it`s a long road but worth it in the end.If you want some inspiration got to Scatpack.com and check out Rustycuda`s project.Started as a complete rust bucket and is finally taking shape-all down outside in his yard.Or check out my before and after pics-     :)

the "don't punch it" suggestion is a good one.

Yrs ago, while my Chally was being built, I had to settle for a Rustang.  One afternoon, my friend Chris (yup, THAT guy!) and I were turnin wrenches, and he got angry, and smashed his fist onto the roof in aggrivation, leaving a fist-sized dent in the roof!! :o

I wasn't too mad, since it was obnly the phyord, but still...if it was the Dodge, he'da been poopoin Chicklets for a week!!
