Help! Are the E body front end rebuild parts same for 70-74??
« on: March 16, 2009 - 01:13:22 PM »
I want to do a rebuild on my front end. The place I get my stuff from lists the kit as 70-72.

My Cuda is a 73.

Are the parts the same for my 73?

Kit is for inner/ outer tie rod ends, tie rod sleeves, upper/lower ball joints, UCA/LCA bushings, strut rod bushings.

Thanks for any help!
Don

yes, they are the same. They may cut it off at 72 because B bodies changed the front end to teh iso-cushion set up for the 73 model year and since most E bodies are classified with Bs, they show it as a cut off.

No they are Not the same , the idler & pitman arm points down through the center link on 70-72 , 73-74 the idler hooks under the center link & points up

No kidding? I guess someone changed out my 74 to use the earlier style pitman/idler then as  mine has the earlier style on it. I've since swapped them out for fast ratio units, which also point down.

For Don's purposes, they would be the same though since the kit he is after does not contain the idler or pitman.

Wasn't something different with the steering box too? Different size sector shafts? Also  inner bearing on rotors changed in 73 I think? Not that I'm an expert by any stretch ! LOL

Is that true?  My Moog catalog gives the same part number (k7041) for 70-74 idler arms.  I never had a 73/74, don't really know.  I've also always used the cheap 73/74 pitman arm (with 73/74 stearing box) on the earlier b and e bodies.

The  70-72 pitman arms (both manual and power) do have the smaller spline hole (also 73-74 manual).

I have seen them both ways pointing up & down & I know both parts are available
the cone machined into the center link will not match if you use the wrong one

At the widest part of the out shaft where the splines start (its a tapered shaft) a 73/74 is 1.2", a 70/72 is 1.1".
