Exhaust Question
« on: March 16, 2009 - 04:10:13 PM »
Ok, Got the new valance on the rear of my challenger in prep. for the new exhaust. I am between spending the cash for the stock duel exhaust or just doing something aftermarket. with the stock tips. But my question is...
If I go aftermarket I wanted to ask how far out do the stock tips sit from the top edge of the valance. I should know either way as I don't want them to be off, even with the stock exhaust.
I was going to ask as some of you may know. I have a stock 318 with a 4brl. I was going to use the stock duel exhaust with the res. cans and the mufflers. Has anyone used this set up. How does the car sound and perform. Also using stock Exhaust manifolds.
Thanks for any info you can provide.

When I install the tips I leave between 1/4 and 1/2" sticking out, and use rubber or something soft but consistent in size (rubber pencil erasers work great) to center it as you tighten things. Start tightening from the manifolds, and continue to check and adjust as you work towards the back tightening clamps and hangers as you go. Factory exhaust will be very quiet.

Really? I didn't think it would be quiet. Good to know. I am looking to keep a stock look but want to add some base to the car's sound. With the single I am getting good base but I think that is because the muffler is 20 years old. Getting kinda crusty!! Thanks for your help!!!

I had the stock type system on my old '70 chally that had a 440. Didn't have the little mufflers(?) under the back seat, but just the big cans (resonators?) in the back. With headers it sounded great, but I'm sure it was very restrictive. When I uncapped the headers at the track it felt like it had 50 more HP. If you want more noise leave them out and just put a piece of pipe there.  :2thumbs:

When I bought my '70, it had a 383, one header, one manifold, and an AVS with a gummed up and stuck secondaries. It also had the 2 1/4 duals with no resonators (under seat) and just the mufflers (round cans in back). Once the issues were worked out, it sounds pretty cool. But a 318, with manifolds and the resonators, I dont think will be very noisey at all. Then again, I love 2chamber 3" flowmasters' sound...lol

So do the resonators make noice or quiet the car down?
Which is louder, with or without? I am getting a little confused now.   :clueless:

It's definately LOUDER without the resonators under the back seat, but not annoyingly loud like the constant drone of loud mufflers.

what would be better using the stock muffler with out the resonators or doing like a round style flowmaster. I am looking for a good bass tone.

I personally HATE the sound of Flowmasters. It's about identical to the old Cherrybomb glasspaks. If you want that contant droning then go for it.
Our old tow truck (454 Chevy dually) had Flowmasters and all 5 guys that road in it to the tracks hated the sound. The novelty wore off after 10 minutes. I thing some kind of turbo mufflers under the car give the best tone, but that's really a matter of personal taste. I never want to give the cops another reason to pull me over and I get more than enough bass booming in my ears when I play out with the band.

My original 70 'Cuda with the 383 Mag, dual exhaust had both the mufflers and resonators.  Very quiet.  :(   I even had the resonators cut out and replaced with straight pipe.  A little louder but not much.  I'm going with an aftermarket system on my current 70 'Cuda 440 project.  :bananasmi

360 4 barrel

headers, 2.5 in exhaust, turbo mufflers

I like the sound, it sounds alot meaner with the stroker now. But still too quiet for me.

I agree, been there done that.  Another bad thing about Flowmasters is every 5.0 Mustangs got 'em, and who wants to sound like that?

WHAT!?! I think I'm going to be ill!  :puke:

Just kidding, it is all a matter of taste... personally, I like my Flowmasters, but your not driving any of our cars.

I once read to get an idea of what you want, chase cars down at a show or cruise that have the tone you like, then ask them about their set-up.
I don't know if you have that kind of time, or even if cruising is active where you are, we still have a couple of months to go here for that.

You got it. That is the sound I am looking for. I know it will not be the same with a 318 but that is about what I am looking for. That sounds great!!  did you put the mifflers by the tank or by the seat. I want to use the stock tips which I already have. Thanks for the vid. That was great!!
