70 e-body how long is the steering shaft?
« on: March 18, 2009 - 04:06:15 PM »
How long is the 70 e-body drive shaft? Mine is 38 and 1/2". Has mine colapsed a little? The reason I'm asking cause  I can't get me steering colunm installed do to it beeing to short to reash the steering gear box. This problem came after I restored the steering colunm.

I couldn't get that exact measurement but from the base of the crush can to the tip of the shaft was 40", and to the top of the crush can I get 45".

Hope this helps I believe there are some plastic roll pins in there that allow the column to collapse in an accident.

Tom

BTW where did you get the gaskets etc?

Power steering shaft is about 40.5 inches from the threaded end to center of the dowel pin, manual steering is about 43.5

Got the gaske etc on eBay over time...

Power steering shaft is about 40.5 inches from the threaded end to center of the dowel pin, manual steering is about 43.5

So that means mine is 2 inch to short...  So my steering shaft must have collaps then. I'm missing one of the roll pins as fare as I can see.

Upper shaft is 13.3/4" and lower shaft is 24" = 37.3/4" So that mean mine has collaps? It looks liek one pine is missing. But it looks like one is there tough or is this somting else?

They are not pins, its where the plastic was injected.
