Do these (factory) R/T hood scoops work?

    Do these (factory) R/T hood scoops work?

    Hi, just wondering if my R/T hood scoops would work. As in, do they actually channel cold/fresh air to the air filter, or would they if they were suitably modified, anyone successfully done this?. Or are they supposed to be blocked off (I don’t have any insert thingy’s to go inside the scoop).

    They do let fresh air into the engine compartment, but I believe the back sides just channel water away from the engine.

    Yes I was wondering about that. Do you know what is supposed to screw onto the inside of these? Is it a honeycomb type insert or something similar?

    The inserts effectively block the scoops off killing any opportunity for fresh air to enter the engine compartment. Many people have modified their scoops for fresh air duty though. Factory correct will have an insert that attaches by a couple of screws to the small bars inside your scoop.

    Just leaving the covers off will not have any effect on fresh air to the engine.  The air will just blow in and past the intake.  I know some people have modified the scoops under the hood to better direct the air, but still it has minimal effect.  The scoops are too small to take in much air at all.

    Yeah ok, thanks for the heads up. I might have a look at doing some modifications once I get around to fitting them back into the hood. I'll keep you posted. :cheers:

    I have no proof of this but…    :thinkerg:

    I think dodge originally intended for the scoops to be functional.
    The openings in the scoop for one and Secondly if you look at the bracing it appears to me that it was designed to hold a fresh air box including the holes in the bracing.
    Early testing must have shown a lack of air flow due to the small size for it to function without a redesign of the hood.(larger openings)  :crying:

    Just my thoughts however I have never read anything on this but if someone has it would be cool to know the rest of the story as they say.  :2cents:

    The fact that the hood itself is open at the scoop attaching point compared to a closed hood for the 'Cuda makes me think the same thing. I know it would be fairly easy to make a ram air system. The scoops are low but would probably pull in a decent amount of air.

    and the best way to got air in the scoop, the scoop must be at least 1 inch higher than the hood (like a challenger t/a hood) there's not enough air circulating on the surface of the hood

    While it is pretty common knowledge that the T/A scoop is one of the best fresh air hoods that Mother Mopar built, there are several that were not super effective but did the job like the air grabber or even the AAR hood(my personal favorite). We have to remember that half the allure of the scoop was the way it was marketed. I can very easily see an upscale R/T with functional hood scoops.

     :iagree:  The scoops are too low to get any real "ram air" effect or to cool under the hood.  It might help a little though.  I do agree with others that the factory did intend to have them functional.  If I'm not mistaken, on one of there ads, possible an ad with a purple '71 model, they mention optional functioning hood scoops or mention something about removeable block off plates.  Also as mentioned, the back of the scoop is made with an upward curve so as to decrease the amount of water/rain entering the engine compartment.

    As they are not best for a ram air effect, they would be useful just to pull in cool air (at least cooler than under the hood) if the air filter snorkel was routed to the open hood scoops.  :2cents:

    FYI, the inserts are reproduced if you need them.  Not sure by who.

    NO Mopar scoop except for the 69 1/2 A12 cars were very good.  They all, even the T/A hoods could not get above what is called the "boundary layer" of air that flows over the hood of the car.  This boundary layer actually creates a pocket of air that barely moves right on top of the hood.  That's why all racing vehicles have air scoops that stick up real high, to get above the boundary layer.

    Any hole in the hood that the aircleaner tub seals to will allow the engine to pull in cooler outside air.

    Cooler air = more horsepower.

    Yeah the “Ram air” concept is cool (nice play on words eh ;)) but it aint going to happen with those scoops. I was thinking more along the lines of some simple plumbing and sucking in some nice cool air, not really forcing it in. Anyway, turned out to be an interesting topic eh.

     Alot of people do not like the new T/A scoop on the new race Challengers, it is alot taller than the original one (cool looking). They did that for function, not looks. The only way your going to get function on a lower scoop is to have it hang over the front of the hood or use a the "Thunderbolt" effect like in the headlights....
     On a street it doesn't really matter, you can't drive 100+ mph down the streets,
    or could you ?
