Hands protection.....

I prefer bare hands, as that is the way I am used to.  However, sometimes I use mechanic gloves with full fingers if I am doing some heavy lifting or wrenching.

I am a mech. by trade. I work on all kinds of vehicles in our fleet from the 2008 Suburbans that are lifted, up-armored HMMWV's, loaders, back hoes, minivans, and Riverine boats.

The only time I wear Mechanix is when I am working with something where I know I would cut my paws (broken windshields, rust, knuckle busting areas) but I don't always wear them when doing that stuff. I would say 30% of the time I wear them when those risks are present.

I've got the gloves, the goggles, the shied etc. etc. but I'm usually elbow deep in something before it dawns on me....dang those glove sure woulda........

I have found that if one hand is wrapped around a cold beer, it keeps both hands out of trouble.

If I'm doing something where I could get cut, I usually wear a pair of leather palmed gloves you can find in the gardening section - heavy duty enough to protect my hands, but easy to slip off for fine work.

I also keep a box of blue latex (?) gloves to try to keep the grease off, but they usually rip and then I chuck 'em and get dirty.

Most of the time I'm bare-handed.

I used to never wear any type of gloves. Now I have to always wear em. My skin just can't tolorate oil and dirt like they used to.

Depends on what I am doing. I like the Mechanix type gloves as you can do most anything with them on. I sometimes use leather gloves if what I am doing is greasy/dirty work or I might be barehanded if its intricate type stuff. Since my car is gonna be a driver and I did not tear it all the way down there is still lots of road grime on the frame and undercarriage.

I forgot to mention I do wear welding gloves for welding and plasma cutting,........usually.

But even then I dont wear them all the time.  Just glancing at my fingers, almost every one has a knuckle busting scar, but my left index finger is the worst.  Scars up and down the thing, nothing huge, just doesnt match the rest of the finger. 

Working on cars though, I wont wear a glove unless I know that I'm going to bust a knuckle.  But usually by then its too late.     That and a lot of times the spaces are so tight you cant wear gloves.  I find them clumsy, but sometimes they are necessary.

Usually I don't wear gloves, but if I'm about to do an oil change I'll put on nitrile gloves, and if i'm doing anything suspension or brakes related I use Mechanix gloves.

I'll only wear them for Welding or cutting sheet metal and removal of broken glass.I like to be able to feel what i'm doing and can never get comfortable with them.

  Bare hands, I tried gloves once and couldn't feel what I was doing. I notice that the up coming generation seem to wear gloves but I also notice bits of glove in and around the components, small pieces of latex in a motor will not be good.

I worked at a Dodge dealer from '85-91 and gloves were never seen. For that matter, not many people used safety glasses when cutting metal with a die grinder.
I do not wear gloves when wrenching. I like to have the fingertip touch.
Nowadays it seems like most of the new techs wear the rubber gloves. I guess it is how you are brought up and what is available at the time. I didn't have the rubber gloves available to me when I was wrenching.

I will add that I work in a mine that is about 80% salt. Ding your hands and you will pay for days. While we are at it I know that scraping your fingernails on a bar of soap will keep the grease and dirt out of there also.
