Orange or Chrome ecu box?
« on: March 25, 2009 - 05:24:15 AM »
I have a 74 318 in my car.....need to get the ecu box.....I am not sure how the motor is built.....but I was told it was rebuilt to factory specs 5  years ago.

Should I get the orange or chrome box, as I see the chrome has "a hotter spark".......its only a $20 difference but if it is wasted $$$ why spend it....

Thanks guys.

Get the chrome box. The orange ones are cheaply made now.   :22yikes:

  I run a 72 340 cuda box on mine. Right over the counter. It is for 1972 sb hp only.  Runs my 440-6 easy enough with no issues at all. Spins my engine to 6700 but goes higher and my plugs stay clean.  So a 74 318 would have no trouble with that box.   Or a chrome one if you need the look and the talk on the walk :2thumbs:

Well, I stopped at NAPA after work and was surprised to see that they wanted $51 for a stock ecu box! They do carry acheaper one for $38 I think it was.....

I can get the chrome for $58 and the orange for $38 online!

So not a whole lot of difference.

If having the chrome one with hotter spark isnt a BAD thing then maybe I will just go that route anyways. ??

What ballast do you use for the chrome box?

The ballasts I see on the mopar parts sites say "for orange box", "mechanical advance"  or "resto 4 prong"....nothing about the chrome one?

the ballast only protects the coil , I use a low Ohm 2 pin resister , the ECU has moved the resister inside the box so you never need  to use the 4 pin

I just picked up a "duralast" at autozone for $24 and tax....life time warranty.....so not a bad deal I guess...

I just needed something to put into the car to get it running....once it is running will look to upgrade.....

Thanks all for the advice!

I honestly don't know what could really be that much different in any of those little ECU boxes you buy. Whatever's inside has to all fit inside something the size of a cigarette pack. Any of them will work OK on a mild street motor. I had the orange one on my Chally when I bought it and it worked fine, but when I put the big motor in the idle definately improved with the Digital 6 MSD and I needed a rev limiter. A mostly stock motor has one already built in with the stock heads
