Vinyl top question
« on: March 25, 2009 - 08:35:29 PM »
Now that I have my car back I noticed since I said I was putting a vinyl top on that the roof was not prepped as well as if it were a hardtop. There are some very small hail dents still visible in the right light. I know the tint is not consistent but it does have a healthy coat of clear and thats all I was looking for is protection from water for when the top starts to go south some time in the future. I also know that I will have to rough up the paint to put the top on and at that time would it be good to have the body guy put some glaze putty or even filler in those very small indentions or will the top hide these small imperfections? I never noticed these when it was in primer.

The vinyl top should cover a fair amount of imperfections in the roof. I know mine did. That is why the superbirds all had vinyl tops, because PLymouth didn't want to finish the roofs on them.

I'd say if you didn't notice it in primer no one will in vinyl

What color vinyl are you putting on Brett ?  And how small are the dents ?

Putting on a white top like it had from the factory. The dents are all about half the size of dime size up to almost dime size. I did not put my hand to them but in the right light I could easily see them in the clear coat. The body guy assures me they will not show but I would hate to find out they do after the top is on.

You should be safe with them only being so small and using a White roof.  If it was a Black roof i would of siad have it fixed :2thumbs:

Well, being like I am, is there any reason not to use a bit of glaze putty? It would be very thin in the places it needs to be and it would be on roughed up clear coat. Any problems in doing that?

The only problem with blade putty and the sort.  Is that they are porrus like a sponge and will draw out the moisture and hold it. Best off not using something like that.  The dings could very well be nearly taken out as low spot when you wet sand the clear coat, maybe talk to your painter and see if it was sanded and recleared if the dents may disappear ?

Just a thought. :2thumbs:

pdr?  Dont know if it works on older cars with the metal being thicker.  But maybe worth a try.
