Has anyone ever heard of this item separating from the rubber hub?  What is the worst case sinareo if this happens?

Heard of it but never seen it on a Mope. Had a buddy back in the 70's that had a 327 Chevelle and his whole dampner used to come off the motor (GM didn't use bolts on them I guess to save $$) One time when I was in the car it came off and we found it out in a corn field. He had a hammer in the trunk and we beat it back onto the crank and went on down the road. :working:

If the rubber seperating the hub from the ring looks real deteriorated I'd replace it with a new one. If it still looks decent don't worry about it.

And NEVER pull the dampner off with anything but the right puller that screws into the pulley bolts. Yanking it off by the outer ring is a  :nono:

I had one come off on my old 392 hemi. The pulley was bigger than the balancer ring so it didn't go anywhere, it just rattled around between the hub and the pulley. The 392 is internally balanced so the only way I new something had happened was from the noise it was making. I also had a balancer ring turn on the hub on a Ford pickup I used to own. I shut it off one evening and I guess it turned when the engine stopped, because when I started it up the next morning it had a bad vibration. You could never tell by looking at it that it had moved though, it looked normal!

Yes, the pulley will keep it from flying off the car. The telling sign will be if your timing mark seems to be off. It will spin before it completely falls off the hub.

Rule of thumb, if the pulley has done a few miles, if the rubber looks swollen, don't use it.   :grinno:
When assembling a new motor the balancer's TDC mark  MUST  BE  CHECKED  for accuracy, again if in doubt get a new one & recheck that also.
