Gauge Electronics question
« on: March 26, 2009 - 07:30:23 AM »
After a recent cruise, I noticed a hair dryer smell.  :scared: and my tach is going nuts!! I cant afford a new tach or to send it out right now. Can I just disconnect it from the coil to kill power or do i need to do something else?  :sadwavey:

you can just disconnect it at the coil ,but the best approach is to un plug the power at the rear of the Tach

Thanks Chryco, I think I'll do that until I can afford to fix it. I may get one of those RTE voltage limiters just in case there is some funky spikes going on or something.

Im no electrician.  :faint:

if it's ony tach problem and fuel, temp oil gauges work fawlessly there's no need to tuch the voltage limiter. just disconnect 12V+ (stud) at the tach back.

The voltage limiter has nothing to do with the tach. The tach has it's own power source. Straight 12 Volts, and the signal from the coil.

The limiter is for the other gauges (except for tach and speedo).  My concern would be the smell.  Like was said before, the limiter would not have anything to do with the tach, but if you pull the gauges any time in the near future, I would go ahead and replace it with a new solid state one, just for piece of mind.  After the tach is disconnected, if you still have the smell, then it could be more than that.

I concur. I think I'll order that to be safe.
