Magnumforce 2" drop spindles, 11.75" rotors installed!
« on: March 26, 2009 - 08:11:30 PM »
Ok, I thought I'd start my own thread on this so I can post up all the info I've got. I bought 1.12" torsion bars from Firm Feel a few months back and found I ran out of adjustability on my t-bar adjusters. Fortunately for me Magnumforce finally came out with their 2" drop spindles to solve my problems without having to re-index my torsion bar anchors  :eek4:. I was waiting to install them until I got all the parts for my 11.75" rotors...

Here's most of what you need.

I also got new wheel seals (the ones for the 11" rotors won't fit!), new dust caps and 1 new spindle washer/nut/lock. Would have got 2 but the parts store was out and today was my day!

The quality on the drop spindles is pretty awesome. :2thumbs: Hats off to Magnumforce on this one, they look much stronger than the Fatman fabrication spindles previously offered, and for less $ too! You'll notice the lower ball joint mount bolts are different, they have a flush mount head and take a 3/8" allen wrench. I recommend a socket set up for this though, the locking nuts including are seriously tough, and take a good amount of torque to get tightened. I didn't have this one, so I had to run to the parts store.

The rotors are from rotorpro's on eBay for a '77 Cordoba, shipped quickly and look to be good quality. For some reason one had an unfinished burr on the inside of the rotor (on the inner side of the bearing race) that I ground down. The other had been finished already, probably the same way I did it. Must have missed one! The 11.75" caliper brackets are the pin-style so I could retain my calipers, although the slider type calipers are stronger and have a little less flex. They are also harder to come by...

One thing I noticed is that with the 11.75" brackets you can now get at the caliper bracket bolts without removing the brake line to the caliper.  :woohoo:

Here's the rotor mounted... (yes, I know my car is dirty, it was raining the other day)

You'll also notice the spindle relocates the caliper perpendicular to the ground (at 9 o'clock position) vs the original that has the caliper at an angle (at about 10:30 :D). The top of the spindle is thicker, so routing the brake line is a little more interesting. Maybe its my braided stainless lines, but it was a little harder to get them clear of the spindle itself. You'll also need to have 15" rims, I seriously doubt any 14's will work. I have around 1/4" clearance from the outside caliper to the inside of the rim with the 11.75" rotors

The whole operation is pretty easy, if you get the spindle washers/nuts you only have to undo the upper and lower ball joint bolts. I left my calipers attached and just undid the caliper bolts, no biggie as my rotors were already brand new. The Magnumforce spindles use a '73 and up spindle pattern, mine were '72's, which is why I did the rotor upgrade too, I had to buy new rotors anyway.

As you can see below, its a pretty impressive drop. The pictures don't tell the whole story either, as this is 1 full turn on the adjusters less than the full drop. I only had the smallest bit of tension (basically right where the adjuster bolt seated in the cup) on the adjusters before because of the large t-bars.

And here's the before and after shots. Yes, my car is very dirty. I'm washing it tomorrow! I wanted to get the spindles and brakes done today!

After!

Update!

Took the car for a longer drive, I have some rubbing with bumps on the right hand side. None on the left though, I think this is an alignment issue, which I'll take care of tomorrow. The braking feels better, my car was biased a little too much toward the back and would lock the rears first. With the new drop and the larger rotors it feels like its biased more to the front, as it should be. More fine tuning to be done, but its already a great improvement!

And I washed it!

Nice! Thanks for posting! Do you think the tires will rub if you are turning and hit a good bump? How close is it if you turn the wheels at full lock and bounce the front?
Just curious?

The right side hits at the left lock and while turned either direction on bumps. Its hitting the inside fender lip. Nothing at all on the left side though. I'm getting it aligned tomorrow, so we'll see what that does, I know the alignment is out. Just looking at it there appears to be more negative camber on the left side. I measured the height of the wheel well on both sides, the car is level, so I've got some kind of geometry issue there.

My rims aren't exactly right either. The backspace isn't enough, which I've know for awhile. Wasn't an issue before, might be now. They're pacer uni-lugs, and just don't have enough backspace for their size. They're probably for a Furd. Interestingly enough, the right rear also rubs just slightly while under load (cornering plus bumps). The rear is also level side to side, maybe the body is shifted to the left . Based on what I see, it isn't hitting by much on either end. We all know that the factory had tolerances of at least a 1/4" either way, which would solve all my problems.

I was planning on buying new rims anyway, might be time. I might have to raise the nose a little in the meantime, but perhaps the alignment rack will tell me a little more. I'll keep everyone posted, I'm finally getting close to having this thing set up suspension wise. I still need sway bars, and I'll be changing to manual steering when I get the 340/4-speed swapped in.

Lucky! I intend to keep looking, although for now the pin-type calipers are working just fine.

Well I was going to get it aligned today but when I took it in they said they couldn't do it, too much play in the left balljoint!  :eek7: Since they're basically brand new I made them show me what was up, turns out it wasn't the joint, but that the whole assembly was loose in the A-arm. And of course Les Schwab won't touch the ball joint, "liability". I called up Ray at CAP, who reminded me that mopar ball joints screw in. He told me to try tightening it up, but that if anything needed to be replaced to let him know and he'd take care of it. I tightened it up, bingo, no more play. Not sure how it got loose, but I'll keep an eye on it. Unfortunately after all this the alignment rack was all booked up, so now I'm waiting 'til next Wednesday. Ugh.

I also found my "big" rub on the right side, I forgot that I had removed the fender brace on the left side as it was rusted at the inner fender (which needs to be replaced on the driver's side). Looked at the right side and saw the tell-tale bright spot on the right fender brace, so I removed that one too. Still has a small rub on the fender lip at full left lock if the car is moving (weight shift), just clears stationary. I still think the alignment should clear this up, but it wouldn't take much lift to clear it anyway.

You might want to keep an eye on that ball joint and if it moves again tack weld it in position. Just my  :2cents:

What size tires are you running?

225/60/15's in the front, 245/60/15's in the rear . As I mentioned above, the rims don't have enough backspace regardless of the suspension. Still, if the suspension is the same side to side you'd think it'd clear on both sides, so we'll see if an alignment cures it. I'll be going to 17x8's in the near future, with the proper backspace...

You might want to keep an eye on that ball joint and if it moves again tack weld it in position. Just my  :2cents:

If it moves again I'll be talking to Ray at CAP, because something isn't right. Right now I'm going to hope that it just wasn't torqued properly. But if it moves again I'll know that either the arm or ball joint is out of spec, or that the arm has been damaged by the joint being loose, none of which are my fault. Ray expressed an interest in solving the problem for me if there was one, and that's the route I'll take. I don't want to put a band aid on it like that, it'll only cause me more grief down the road.

Looks great, 72bluNblu!   Has a meaner stance to it now!

I like the fact that you could keep your old calipers.  Saves $$$.

Aside from the cross drill/slots, are those just stock '77 Cordoba rotors?  :clueless:

I was wondering if you could mention how much the rotors and caliper brackets cost?  ???  I couldn't find that vendor on Ebay.  :dunno:

Cool!  Thanks for the info, brads70!

This looks like a nice upgrade, but my question is how does the braking improve if you are using the same size pads with a bigger rotor?  Although the rotors are bigger, it looks like the stock pads still cover the same surface area.  :dunno:  Is it becaus the calipers are further out?  :clueless:

Yes, that is exactly it. If you look at most 13 and 14 inch rotors, they don't have any more pad area than many 10 inch rotors. But what they do have is greater leverage because of the larger diameter. The greater leverage creates greater braking force.

Think of it as the classic cheater bar on a ratchet scenario. The further out your grip, the more force you create.

Of course this all makes contact patch of the tire to contain the force more important too.
