360 to 440

I am planning to go from 360 to 440 in my Challenger. Basically I would like to know how many differences I am looking at. Power steering car. I know the driveshaft is different length. I will need 4 inches shorter correct? Wondering about motor mounts also. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks...Chris

That was covered in a recent thread so I should be able to remember everything. Big block mounts, radiator, driveshaft, ECU wiring has to be lengthened, if you want it to handle you will need bigger diameter torsion bars. 8 3/4 rear end minimum if you have the small 7 1/4. I think that is it but I am probably forgetting something.

I have a nice 8 3/4 been shortened and strengthened. I forgot about the torsion bars, thanks for the reminder. Wiring is going to be the Ron Francis kit, so that is covered. Radiator will be an aluminum, with electric fans. Main thing I was concerned about was the mounts, drive shaft, and headers. I will do some more reading, see if I can find it. Thanks for the help bb

If the 360 had a 727 then the drive shaft will be the same and fit right in there. The K member will take 440 mounts.  If your factory wiring was ok. It only needs a couple of wires lengthened and quite easy to do.  the task you're doing is very simple to convert without any major problem glitches.

The car has a 904 tranny. I had already planned on rewiring the car, I want all new. I dont want to deal with 37 year old wiring. Most of the stuff I am going with will be aftermarket. Stereo, guages, qnd what ever else I decide to add. I think it will be easier to just rewire the whole car. When I get the harness out, I will be sending it to you.

I know how that goes. I have been out of work sice October. I have been doing ok, keeping myself afloat though. I sell parts around locally, mostly brand x stuff. Sales have been pretty decent lately. I know that I am a lot happier, than being stuck in that stupid factory 60 to 70 hours a week.

I know money is tight, but have you considered a stroker kit for the 360.  You would have 408 cubes or there abouts.   You would not need different motor mounts or torsion bars, and you could see if your current radiator is good enough, etc.  I'm trying to say the cost might be about the same, or even cheaper with the 360 mod.   The posts on this forum from guys with 360 strokers....well, they are all impressed and like the performance.
Also realize a modestly built 360 would easily have about 400 horsepower/torque which is right in there with OEM specs for the original 440, and with a stroker you'd be way past a stock 440.  JMO.

personally I would pass on the electric fans , a simple clutch fan will beat them for air flow everytime

I have decided to build a 451 stroker from a 400. I have always been more of a big block person. My 360 runs pretty good, but I just like my big blocks. I havent decided on what I will do for a fan yet. I do have a nice clutch fan I could use. I am going aftermarket aluminum radiator, so I figure it was about as easy to get the one that has the dual fans on it. My buddy just bought one, an I really like it. Glennster I will email you.
