Antique auto insurance suggestions?
« on: March 28, 2009 - 07:58:46 AM »
Who do you guys use for your antique auto insurance?

I am considering having my 72 fish plated as antique..its currently titled regular, and going to antique requires having the coeverage at the time of having the title changed and getting the plate....

Can you folks recommend anyone?  Obviously looking to spend the least money for the best coverage...LOL

I also want to have coverage on the car for while its being stored in case of fire, theft, etc....

There is no rush I guess as the car isn't running yet. But thought I would start looking into this.

I've had Hagerty for years, but never had a claim (the perfect customer) so I don't really know how they treat you when you need help.  A friend of mine had American Collector for his 71 Charger R/T (original R/T) and he had a couple claims including an engine fire and a total.  At the time they did not have "agreed upon value" but they covered the fire claim completely.  When he got nailed in an intersection by a drunk kid  :villagers: the car was totaled and they gave him a lump payment and he kept the car.  A donor car was found and the entire front clip was cut off and replaced with the $$ he got.  He is still showing the car today. I believe he no longer is with American (used up all his chips), but they did take care of him when needed.

This has been posted many times in one form or another. If your going for Classic Ins. Get an appraisal. Yes it will cost you a few bucks. BUT there's never a he said / she said game down the line. Depending were you live often dictates prices and options that are available to you. We all know the major players in the classic market. But often times you can get great coverage thru your regular insurer. (depending on location/driving record) I've been lucky here (Wis) my regular ins also does classic cars at a great rate. Good Luck!

Silver Wheels Insurance. I have never used them, as of yet, but many freinds have.

The three big players I know of are Hagerty, Grundys, and American Collectors.  I have used American Collectors since 1999 because they are affiliated with USAA, which is my insurance carrier for my daily driver, home, and life.  Last week I wanted to see if Hagerty or Grundys were cheaper, so I did online quotes.  They were all about the same price for identical coverage.  I believe they all offer full reimbursement on agreed value of the car, but you need to double check that for yourself.

My policy limits me to 2500 miles per year and the vehicle can't be used for transporation to work, but AC offers policies with higher mileage tiers and occasional daily driver usage.

:iagree: I had to replace my windshield and Hagerty was great! It cost about $50 more than they estimated it, but I sent them a copy of the bill and they sent me a check for the balance, no questions asked! Hagerty uses a declared value on their policies, and they have no mileage limitations.

Hagerty uses a declared value on their policies, and they have no mileage limitations.

I'm not sure I agree on the mileage.  When you get a quote from Hagerty they don't talk about mileage but they ask you what the car is used for.  I asked about the mileage limit since the other major players have one.  The rep said they didn't have a set mileage tier, but when I pried a little bit I got her to divulge that they like to keep people under 2500 miles a year.  My guess (and it is only a guess - I have no facts to substantiate this) is this is a marketing ploy to separate themselves from the other companies that openly state a mileage limit, but if you are exceeding 2500 miles per year your rates probably increase.  Does Hagerty require you to give an odometer reading every time you renew your policy (I don't know the answer)?  If so, why would they do that unless they are using that info to determine your rate?  Again, just a hunch on my part.  For most of us this is irrelevant since there probably aren't many board members who exceed 2500 miles per year.....

I have JC Taylor.  I have the Cuda insured for 30K and Joe's Cutlass insured for 15K (anything under 30K didn't require an apprasial) and we pay $325-$350 a year, I forget the exact amount.

I've been with Hagerty for 7 years now, and they have never gotten an odometer reading from me or even requested one.

I used American Classic for my last car and had real good luck with them.  Not sure which one I will use with this one though.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

I forgot to mention that JC Taylor doesn't require an odometer reading either.
