Clutch pictures
« on: March 28, 2009 - 02:18:11 PM »
Here are some pictures of my clutch after only 150 miles.  Can anyone look at these and tell my what happened to it or what could have been the problem?  I know the 512 stroker was probably part of the problem but I really didn't beat on it that much. :burnout:

thanks

Oh ya Chryco, I still need the McLeod part numbers.  Here are what I think they may be.

That looks pretty bad, lots of hot spotting and inconsistent wear, that sucker was slipping a LOT.  Could be to much power for not enough clutch, I've seen clutch discs that were put in backwards do that in 50 miles.

the pressure palte is the correct #
the disc is variable with differnt compounds used
the Street Twin is the Ultimate system with dual discs , it is supposed to be good top 1000 hp part  # is 64406B-00-02 with 23 spine tranny
the shear torque of the stroker & lack of spring pressure is causing the existing clutch to silp everytime you got on the power

The 505 making 590hp is running thru a Centerforce with 3.54s. No issues like that. Clutches need tim eot seat, more so than new brakes do. How many miles of mild driving did you do? Did you align the bellhousing and block (using a dial indicator and adjustable or offset dowels?) Are you certain it was adjusted properly? Ram would be my second choice, but I hate pedal effort because I got bad knees. That street twin is a cool setup too. I've never installed one, but several friends have them and love them.

Moper,
I probably did not do enough mild driving before I jumped on it but on the other hand I have not raced it or did a lot of beating on it as the car is like brand new and I didn't want to damage anything.  I have heard that they would like you to drive around 400-500 miles with alot of stoping and mild starts to break it in before any hard use.  This clutch was slipping the first time I backed out of the garage!  I did not align the bellhousing with the crank so that is a possibility but the tranny slipped right in the first shot.  I did have plenty of free play on the clutch so I think it was adjusted properly.  i'm wondering if the Zoom pressure plate may have been adjusted improperly from the factory since it slipped all the time.  I have heard both good & bad about centerforce.  Anyone heard about SPEC clutches?  The shop that built my engine recommended them, he is putting one behind his 528 Hemi Challenger project.

I had a street twin once, it made it difficult to power shift.  The syncro's could not spin up 2 discs quick enough.   Can your friends power shift with them?

I'm going to throw out a few items here.  You did resurface the flywheel prior to installing this clutch.  Looks like a zoom.  You are not making that rediculous amount of horsepower to overcome some of the new technology on the market.  My recommendation is to try the new RST from Mcleod.  It's less expensive than the street twin, handle in upwards of 800 HP and has an acceptable pedal feel.  Personally I have not driven one behind a mopar, however the Camaro that I drove has a Nelson Racing Engine twin turbo LSX engine that makes around 1300 on full tune was like driving my mild 340 in traffic.  Great feel and had a bunch of bite.  Spec is a quality clutch maker, I can't offer that much advise on them and I don't know there product line very well.  Again, my recommendation is McLeod.  Red Roberts is back in Owner's chair again so quality will be focussed again.
My 2 cents - Tony Edler - Classic Mopar 5 Speed

CG, the only one who drag races his couldnt power shift with the stocker...lol. The 505 had the Centerforce in it, and again, he's no Ronnie Sox (neither am I, BTW...lol) I have put the SPEC clutches in vettes before with very good results. Never in  amopar tho.

dtedler, I did not resurface the flywheel as it was a new 440source piece but I know I should have anyway.  I checked on both McLeod models, the B&B long as well as the RST twin.  They said it would be around 2 weeks before I can get either one?  I also looked more at the Spec clutches and they appear to be a diaphram version that Chryco hates but the RST twin was as well?  Both are supposed to handle 800HP or there abouts so either technically should hold my 512's 500hp & 600 ft. lbs especially since I only plan on driving it on the street and only play with the beast on once in a while.  I just don't want to have to pull another clutch later this summer.  I'm going to see if I can get the SPEC yet this week so I can install it this weekend.

Your clutch slipped after being installed, while backing the car out of the garage? That tells me your finger height was not adjusted correctly.  If the car is still apart, bolt the disk and pressure plate on, tighten the bolts, then look at the 3 release levers. Are they touching the cover? I'll bet you a case of beer that they are.  The cover was preventing it from releasing all of the way. That's why they give you 3 adjuster bolt heads at at the lever pivot points.

Lower the leversso they don't touch. Add a little extra for disk wear. If you go too low the clutch wont release all the way.

If you have to wait for the new clutch anyway, throw it together and try it, then send the beer to St. Louis.  (Do not buy the CenterForce)

Rob,
I'm betting your right as well.  But I have a new SPEC 3+ clutch that will be here Monday.  I have the flywheel getting resurfaced now so I don't have any interest in putting the Zoom back in but I'm guessing this was probably what my problem was.  The Spec is supposed to handel 800+ HP so it should hold anything my 512 can dish out.  If I make it up to St. Louis anytime soon I'll give you a call and buy you a beer or two!  thanks
