removing dash speakers
« on: March 28, 2009 - 07:27:49 PM »
Not sure if this has been asked before but can the center dash speaker be removed/replaced with both dash pad and windshield in place? Would like to swap out the speaker but would like to leave rest alone for now. :clueless:

The speaker is mounted under the dashpad.    :bricks1:

I replaced the center speaker when I replaced my dashpad. Heck, it was probably 8 hours worth of work.   :eek7:  If your dashpad is in good shape, you would have to be REALLY wanting a working speaker in there to go thru all the effort. I can talk you thru it though...    :grinyes:

To me this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Why would the factory put something UNDER the dashpad that was destined to go out/blow up/dry rot long before anything else? I wonder what the labor rate/time alloted was for a dealership to replace the center speaker?

Ok, so here's a secondary question.  What about the two outer speakers in the dash?  Are they installed into the pad like the center one or are they mounted to the frame?

under the pad as well...  I'm doing the same work and last week it took about 6 hours effort to remove the dash pad without removing windshield and dash frame...

Actually, I think the dash pads started cracking before the speakers went bad! :roflsmiley:

Hey, did you put the new one in like the factory or over the top of the pad? I am not going to use a factory style speaker but if I did I think I would mount it on top even if I had to mill some off the speaker grill. I think if I mount one there it will be a center speaker for surround sound.

No I just used an inexpensive replacement that fit in the hole.  Kinda wish I bought a higher quality speaker since it is so hard to replace, but I bias the sound 80% to the good rear speakers anyway.  Not that it matters because anything is hard to hear over the roar of the Flowmasters  :grinyes:

I don't know about your '70-71s but my '73's center 4X10 speaker comes out the top...
I replaced it with 2- 3" speakers mounted on a piece of melamine.
