Basically single plane is open plemun feeding all 8 cylinders from all 4 bbls , you can get away with a slightly smaller carb this way
dual plane divides the carb in 1/2 & feeds only 4 cylinders from each side of the carb this theoretically improves low rpm response & drivability , this always requires a bigger carb to supply enough fuel @WOT as you cannot get some of the flow from both side of the carb

Anyone have an idea as to why Chrysler made some 318 2bbl as dual plane and some single plane (other than $$$)?  Surly it wasn’t a high RPM screamer.  You would think it would dual all the way, trying to get the best drivability out of it.

Don't hate me for it, but I have a Chevy 4.3 2bbl in my boat (single plane).  Was looking at replacing it with a 4bbl. The Edelbrock performer is advertised as a dual plane, but it is a single.  The 4.3's firing order is 165432.  It is even fire "bank to bank", it does not need to be dual plane.  Just needs the plenum divider.

I wonder if it was a hood clearance issue.  Single plane could located the carb a little lower.
