MSD Blaster coil users please chime in
« on: March 28, 2009 - 11:13:53 PM »
Any of you have a Blaster 2 coil mounted horizontally in the stock location?

Seems like with the new harness I installed that is where it wants to be....kind of a stretch to the firewall......

Any issues running it horizontally?

you should use the Vibration blaster for horizontal mount accpording to MSD , The regular balster will leak on its side

Thanks for the advice.....I will look again at mounting it vertically but i am not liking that idea......trying to keep the bay clean looking ya know?

Having enough of a decision as towhere to mount the ECU.

I ws going to mount that right next to  the voltage regulator although its edge sneaks just a hair above the top of that area.

in 70 & 71 cars I often hide them under the battery tray so it still oooks stock , in 72 up they would mount above the heater box on the cowl

I already have the ECU on the panel above the heater box.....so not much room...plus would have to extend the harness......

Want to keep it simple.

I decided to go , for now, with an accel superstock coil.......no issues with mounting in stock location.....

At some point I may look into the vibration blast unit.

Yup,
Neil is right. I had an issue with the Blaster 2 coils. Ma Mopar mounted their factory coils horizontally. Not much of a problem with around 12 volts running through them. The MSD box and coil puts out thousands of volts. The Blaster 2 coil is liquid filled but not completely filled where there are no air pockets. Installing it horizontally will place the bubble over the coil windings and cause a hot spot and possibly premature failure. If using an MSD system & blaster coil, it needs to be mounted vertically. I have the non-liquid filled (it's epoxy resin) coil that is also (as Neil already pointed out) suitable for usage in a high vibration area. I had a problem with the Blaster coils failing and the info I put here was basically what MSD told me. I may have screwed some of it up (I often do get things messed up), but I think I mentioned the jist of it. I have my epoxy filled coil mounted to the firewall. I had to make a bracket for it.
