71 challenger R/T story
« on: March 29, 2009 - 10:59:55 PM »
i aquired a 71 r/t challenger a few years ago that had an interesting history. A few people around town remember the car running around town in the early 70's. one guy said that he pulled up next to the challenger one night at a stop light in his 70 383 road runner, he told me all he saw of that challenger was tail lights! anothor man had a 70 boss 302 mustang that he thought was the baddest car around and he said he hung with it untill about 50 mph and then the challenger was gone. so one night in 1978 the guy was racing it and hit a bridge ( the speedometer in the car was broke at 110) somehow the guy survived, the drivers wheel was shoved through the floorboard and broke the mans legs. the car was completly totaled, the guys brother had a 71 charger that had a bad motor so they put the motor in the charger and parked the car in the woods, over the next 20-25 years the guys father sold the car 8 times and people would just go pull a few parts off and leave it in the woods. so after 20-25 years he got tired of it. I saw the car every day on the way to go to work with my dad when i was 10 years old and i just loved the looks of the car, this challenger is what got me into mopars, so one day my dad stopped by and asked about it and the old man said we could have it if we would take the WHOLE thing. The car was a rallye red 340 R/T with a black vynil top and interior, had a rear sway bar, t/a fast ratio steering gear box and who know what other rare options for 1971. when we got the car it was almost completly stripped, and rusted beyone repair, someone took the dash plate, vin tag and cut part of the cowl out, so somewhere out there is a 71RT that isnt a real 71 RT.  if you find yourself buying a car exactly like this check the core support numbers because the core support of this car was tore out in the wreck. i cut the car up and sold most everything that was salvageable, sold the t/a gear box on ebay for 643 dollars. but if it had not been for that challenger i would not have a 70 challenger that i ahve now and i probably wouldnt be a member of this site. and that is my 71 challenger R/T story

Good story.  Sorry the car is so bad but glad you got into mopars and that the car lead you to getting your 70.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

I think this car was on Ebay a while ago. I could be wrong though. Unless there is another red/orange '71 R/T that is smashed to nothing :dunno:

Of course you can use them.  I have a few more pictures of it somewhere  there are two that are pictures of the whole car.  I'll try to find them and get them posted.  I've got a few pics of some dart sports too you can use too if you want them

great story...there is always that "one car" that sticks in our memory banks

a buddy of mine owns a 71 Challenger RT 340 that is very similar...highly optioned...he has owned the car for 35 years or more...yes, it's real

man you buddys car sure is nice, kinda makes me sad to see how nice of a car that 71 could have been, your buddys car looks exactly how this car would have been, the only difference i could see is that the one i had didnt have a go-wing on it.         This is the last pic i have of the car

69bronzeT5 i sent u a pm regarding the pictures

i planned on getting a 70 cuda to rebuild as my next project, but seeing that red 71 r/t that is all restored makes me want to buy a 71 and clone it into what the wrecked rt i had would have looked like. tell your buddy that owns that red 71 that it is an absolutely beautiful car

I thought several times of trying to sell the car on ebay and mabey someone with a lot of ambition, time and money could mabey fix it, i mean it was a real R/T, but with all of the numbers cut off the car it would be pointless to fix it, you could never prove it was a real R/T, plus you would need a anothor car to cut up in order to fix that one, and who would give more then 20 dollars for it.lol
