I'll take your 3.23s if you have a set.

Drove my Chally from Cleveland to Carlisle last year....

My hearing is just coming back.
I have the 3.55 rear.

On the other hand I like the gears for around town, and instead thinking of going to an OD trans.

I'm running 3:55's with 14" wheels , 215/70 tire, turns about 3grand at 60 mph. It's easy to drive around town and real responsive to drive on the hiway at speed, passsing is no problem, comes off the line real snappy. I'm running turbo mufflers and hea the tunes no prob with the windows all down.

That's cool to do in Jersey as long as you don't mind meeting the State Police often and paying $150 tickets. I've found that with muslecars low rear end gearing can help to keep you doing the speed limit. 65 is the max speed on any road here. If you live where the cops don't care if you're 15 over, than knock yourself out. Here they'll pick a car like mine out of a line of 10 cars speeding and give me the ticket. It kinda stands out in a sea of Toyotas and Hondas.

To me thats the hard part. When you can cruise at 75-85 under 3k rpm its hard to drive a car that is doing 1500-2000rpm more at the same speed. You always feel like you need to shift. We have 70 and 75 mph on most of our highways and all the interstates. Usually the 10mph rule is not out of line if you dont abuse it. If I ever get the stuff together to do a 4 speed swap I can comfortably go up in rear gear with the overdrive I bought from Drew. Long ways off on that though.

The more I drive my 3.91 gear car/now with 26 inch tall tires vs 29 inches the more I like it. So easy to pass at any speeds...I have the low range gears in my trans too. 1st is 2.74 and 2nd is 1.54. 90% of the time its in either 2nd or 3rd gear-have a manual valve body.

You need a good running motor that likes to rev and in my opinion a quite exhaust. Cheap gas is a must as well.

Sitting at a stop light in 1st gear its like it has a 4.39 rear gear with the standard 2.45 1st gear. So nice to daydream or get a cd out while others are itching forward waiting for the green light. I'm the last car to take off and around 6 seconds later am the car way out in front  :D

The difference between 3.23's and 3.55's at 70 is only a couple 100 rpm, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

My daily driver '68 Dart conv has 2.76's with an O/D 833, makes for sub 2k rpm on the highway, even with 205/70-14 tires.

Good point, here in Florida the cops are so mad about the recent tax change that reduced their budget they are ticket happy.  A ticket that was $250, is now $560.  That's 1/2 a months rent for most people.  I don't condone speeding but it's absurd they can charge $600 for going 15-20mph over limit and pay the cops overtime to go out and trap people.

I just took my 3.55's out on I-95, at 80mph it was not as bad as I thought.  I'm going to get 3.73s in the Dana.  Worst case you can always get a taller tire if needed.

Old Musclecars are what they are. They will always seem to need another gear after driving a more modern car with more gears and OD and lockup convertors or 6 speed sticks. They also have vague feeling steering, relatively poor brakes and are just less comfortable to drive than their later counterparts. Ever see a factory cup holder in a E-body? If your intent is great mileage and cruising at 1,500rpm at 80mph perhaps you should get a Toyota and strip the body off and mount your Ebody on the chassis, because you will just emasulate it in the process anyway by either taking the motor out of it's power range with high gearing or over burdening it with driveline parasitic losses. That is just handicapping the one thing they were known to do good, go quick in a straight line.  :dunno:

Nah, if I want to do cruise at super low rpm's at 80mph I will just jump in my dads Viper lol. I just want what CP was talking about, having a motor strong enough to take a dip in rear gear or an od trans without sacrificing more than a half second on the strip. I know it can be done, it just takes cubic dollars.

Don't forget to upgrade your brakes the more you gear up to get the rpms down. Another thing I like about my 3.91 gears is the engine braking I get when my foot is off the gas....you could just down shift as you slow down but in panic stops good luck..my brain doesn't react that fast anymore.

Don't get me started on cup holders  >:( those things along with cell phones cause many to drive like "little old ladies".
