engine number kits

Just returned from a swap meet and met a fellow that sells block stamp sets complete with an alignment block or plate for restamping engines .my question is this a common practice .also the kit was for a ford but he has them for other makes . and is this for new blocks only . :dunno:

I was just informed that these kits are for pre 40s cars .and used on frames and engine codes not engine vins .also were used for frame stamps . they have been around for years im told and much like machine stamps .

I read somwehere that dealer employees were supposed to stamp the vin # on warranty blocks.Restamping was never an issue untill the cars became collectible and worth a lot of money.

re=stamping is pretty common with alot of GM folks, from what I understand thats why the Corvette clubs starting using the born with term instead of numbers matching. Not my ideal of right but the judges let them do it sooooo.......
