Timing mark way off....
« on: April 08, 2009 - 05:29:18 PM »
So my 68 318 timing mark is waaaaay off. It reads 36* at idle/ no vacuum advance hooked up. My only conclusion is that the balancer slipped or it is off of a different year motor? I know the heads were done at one point and the advance nipple was pointing at the carb when i got it  :scared: so i had to jump the oil pump gear back a tooth.

does anyone know if the timing marks were in different spots of the balancers from different years on a 318? or should the year not matter. I thought abut getting a different balancer.

I mean, i could also just time it with a vacuum gauge too couldnt i?  :dunno:

Yes they were, I don't know the year break down but the marks on the timing chain cover were on the left (drivers side) some years and on the right others.

Thats what i was thinking. My problem is, the mark on the balancer is still way to the right (bottom) of my left side marked timing cover.

So something is off. I wouldnt think it has anything with the distributo drive gear b/c i think that just messes with the alignment of the advance nipple.

When assembling an engine I always check the TDC mark on the hamonic balancer, even on a new one as they are usually out a few degrees. I then mark the centre section for a reference so at a later time I can then check to see if the outer ring has moved and by how much.   :2thumbs:

I never thought of making my own top dead mark.   :thinkerg:

would it be a problem running a slipped balancer? wouldnt it through the "balance" off?? of the motor?  :dunno:

does anyone sell repro balancers?

It is possible that the balance will be off, I mark the outer ring so I know that the timing mark is true, I usually then replace the balancer, yes, when that original balancer is part of a balanced set the new balancer will be slightly out. On a street motor it won't be a problem but on a race motor I have the crank assembly rebalanced at the next rebuild.

I would never run a balancer that had slipped, it's a time bomb waiting to come apart.  I mark my balancers inner and outer rings when I put a motor together so I can tell if it is starting to slip.

If its an internally balanced motor, slipping won't throw the balance off.

Yes, all 318's are internal balanced.  They have a short stroke and small bore (light piston) so even the cast crank version can be internally balanced.

Buy one of those cheap adjustable stops that scews into the plug hole so you can find TDC. Turn it one way and make zero on the dampner, then rotate the motor the other way and your true TDC is half-way in between the marks. I would also do like CG says and mark the dampner & ring to see if it's slipping. I think Proform sells them?
