Rallye Dash Pre-Install Guage Check
« on: April 08, 2009 - 05:42:50 PM »
Ok guys, I've gathered all the parts (I think), read a bunch of old posts that are very helpful -- so now ready to tackle the replacement of my standard dash with a rallye in my '70 Vert.     I put in a new limiter -- but before I begin the hard part, is there a way to "check" whether the guages work at all (I bought it off ebay)   I don't have any fancy equipment -- but I did try the clock after I upgraded it to quartz  :ylsuper:  but now I'm wondering about the rest of them......

How daring are you?

The tach is usually dead as a door nail. If you can post a pic of that 4-gauge cluster, I can pretty much tell you if they work or not by their positions.

...If you want to, you can remove the tach from the housing. There is a long screw on the back of it that +12 volts connects to. You can clip a wire from the input of your ballast resistor to the screw. There is a lug on the back of the tach that needs to be connected to the "-" side of the coil. Other than that, you need to run a wire from one of the remaining three screws on the back of the tach, to some body ground...a valve cover bolt for instance. Seriously, if you don't know what I'm saying, don't try it!! Otherwise, you can rest this tach on your fender or on top of your cowl panel, and start the engine to see what you got.

an ohm meter will tell you if the guage has continuity
the guage will move with a 5v feed as well

you can buy an Ohmmeter for $5 , it has an Ohm scale if you touch the 2 leads together & the needle on the Ohmmeter moves the guage is ok

So just using a small 9 volt batter will work Neil? I am sure mine all work but it would not hurt to test them.

9 volt will work as long as it is only on there briefly .......like very briefly 1 second or so just to get movement

That thing looks great to me. Since you know the clock is OK, I would only worry about the tach. If you want to play it safe, you can hook up the gauge pod to your dash frame, then start the car before you put on the woodgrain bezel. That way if something doesn't work, it isn't that big of a deal to remove the gauge pod again. To me, the woodgrain bezel is the real pain to deal with.

You can still tell the difference between the red and the orange numbers on the tach. If I didnt know any better I would say it looks like it just got restored.

Chryco:    Picked up a cheap Ohm meter (like 2 bucks at a flea market) - all the guages have life!   Thanks for the tip!
