I'm fighting to restore and paint mine and it isn't so easy.  Also the final result cannot be like get a new one.  So, if the price is little less, my advice is to get a good repro.

If it is still viable with no cracks I would get the original. Gotta make sure its not dry as a bone though because if you hit it very hard at all it will get damaged if its a crispy critter.

I vote good repro.  bb71 is right, the risk is a lot higher that it'll be a very delicate piece.

Go with a new one. That original pad is almost 40 years old and is going to be brittle even if it has never seen the sun. Plastics start to deteriorate right after they are made and never stop. If they are exposed to the sun it will happen faster, but even if kept away from the sun it's still happening. That original piece might be okay for a museum car, but I wouldn't use it in any kind of car that's going to be driven.

If you do plan on using an old pad that looks good; it needs more to be put on more relaxed. Since it's been exposed to the elements for so long, the vinyl has evolved a memory on how it was when it was originally mounted onto the frame. If it's still on the original frame, put it on just like it is. Do not tighten the center mount points all the way. Barely have them snug. Do not use Armor All on it.

I think that's a good choice. I wouldn't buy one sight unseen.

I bought a used original off ebay for 125 bucks. It is hard. It has a small crack all ready and has a tiny puncture in it. It filled the void, but I will be buying one  off of Nick sooner or later. Or just drop buy Elpaso and pick it up direct myself

Can you just buy them direct like that? Heck I only live 160 miles from El Paso and go there about 4 times a year anyway. If I can do that I will have to keep it in mind in the future.
