Need driveshaft and crossmember shopping info
« on: April 10, 2009 - 12:17:14 PM »
Hey folks....just started looking for a a driveshaft and tranny crossmember for 72 Barracuda that is running an 8 3/4 rear end (2.76 gears, small yoke I think?) and a 1976 318 engine.....planning on a 727 tranny.

Can anyone give me an idea of what I should expect to pay, used, for these and what length etc I might be looking for as far as the driveshaft and any other info that I might need in my search?

Thanks!

Get a driveshaft from any big Mopar at the junkyard and have it shortened and balanced. Easy for any Driveshaft placed to do.  If you have them make you one, the tube doesn't neck down like a factory piece.

SO how do I determine what yoke I have on my rear end?

I took some measurements....

Measuring from outside to outside across the "cups" (where the u joint cap fits) its 3 5/16"

Distance between the inside surfaces of where the caps sit is 2 1/8"

diameter of the cups where the caps sit is 1 1/16" and the cups themselves are 5/8" thick.

I found some info on mymopar.com that said:

Universal Joint Yokes

The 8-3/4" axle was offered with two size cross & roller style universal joint. These are referred to as the '7260' (2-1/8" yoke ID) and the '7290' (2-5/8" yoke ID). Most Imperials and some C-bodies used a different universal joint. The '1330' type joint was used on Imperials and others with a constant velocity joint. The '1330' uses outside snap rings instead of the inside snap rings used by the '7269' and '7290'. The cap diameter for the '7260' is 1.078". The cap diameter for the '7290' is 1.126". The '1330' style joint cap diameter is 1.063".

There are four different yokes that have been used with the 8-3/4" axle for the '7260' and '7290' style universal joints. The '741'/'742' assemblies used a coarse spline (10 splines) drive pinion. Most of the aftermarket gears also use this coarse spline yoke mount. There is a small yoke for the '7260' and a larger one for the '7290'. The '489' assembly used a fine spline (29 splines) yoke. Note: during the phase-in period of 69-71 for the '489' unit, there were several permutations of pinion size and yoke availability. 69-70 '489' units may be equipped with a coarse (10) spline pinion, particularly for the '7290'. There are two yokes for the '7260' and '7290' universal joints with fine (29) splines. Two additional yokes were used for the '1330' style universal joint in constant velocity applications, one for 10 splines and one for 29 splines.

I converted my cap diameter measuremnet from 1 1/16" to 1.0625...that seems to match the "1330 style"....or am I off in how I am figuring this?

I do NOT have any locating tabs on the mating surfaces.....

if you are 2.125 / 2 1/8" inside the ears you have the 7260 joint
the tranny crossmember is the same 71-74 & will fit any tranny

Chryco, that's not entirely true.  Late 71 (really the start of 72) they changed the cross-mount.  I have a '71 cuda and bought a '72-up cross member and it does not fit.

Shadango, let me know your dimension between the two outer holes and I'll measure the member I have tonight.  If it's a match, I'm willing to deal.
