Goodmark and AMD rear quarter panel install
« on: April 12, 2009 - 03:04:54 PM »
Body shop did the work.  All panels went on with no problems.

Right rear quarter was Goodmark.  The opening at the lower edge of gas cap opening is not the same as OEM.  Not sure if we will leave it or correct the contour.  See pics.

Left rear quarter was AMD.  Two areas that need some extra work include trim hole for chrome "L" shaped piece outboard of trunk lid trim...the AMD hole is huge.  What were they thinking??   Contour of ledge at quarter window is way off, should be able to reshape.  See pics.

Did the body shop say witch quarter panel was overall better? Same metal thickness, shaper lines?  :2thumbs:

They said both had their issues that needed work; nothing major.   I can add the Goodmark quarter edge contour at the back of the passenger door does not follow the door.   The body shop thought about working the quarter, but have now decided to change the door edge to match the quarter.
To answer your questions, no did not measure thickness, but they felt similar, maybe not as thick as OEM.  Any difference in crisp lines was not noticable.
I forgot to mention that both outer wheel wells were replaced with AMD.  These were a heavier gauge than the quarter panels, the thickness seemed similar to OEM.  These parts went on with no problems.

Measured metal thickness of both panels at the side marker light indent.   AMD was 0.033 and Goodmark was 0.034 inch.

Good info to know on today's available metal. Nothing fits perfect but that doesn't look too bad.

The gas cap inset would seem to need some work. The depression is noticeable even as seen in primer.

As for the quarter window keep in mind the (finish) felt seal to glass and other seals when you move the edges. Fitment with the door glass is tricky. :2cents:

Yes I'm sure your right, other folks say the quarter window felts won't fit right.  The slotted holes where the felts attach look in close location to OEM, but if I have to I'm considering glueing the felts in.
Thanks for the heads up.

Had not heard of Dynacorn.  I used full quarters.

Parts quality UPDATE:
Body is getting high build primer and block sanding.   The AMD rear quarter (drivers side) needed some filler fwd of the rear wheel.   The Goodmark rear quarter (pass side) needed the lower edge of the gas filler hole corrected, otherwise did not need any special work.
The AMD roof skin and trunk lid did not need any special work.  The Goodmark R/T hood did not need any special work.

Maybe it is my screen but do not see whats wrong with the gas filler hole?
I also wonder if the problems are just on the 72-74 ones>
GoodMark in the past had problems with the skins but not the full quaters like you used.
I have 2 of the very first stampings of the 70-71 ones. But they will be used from the body line down when used since they are for a vert so the window openings will be ok.
Nice to see all thay new metal that is now being made.

No, the shop's doing it.  I would like to do it all, but I don't have bodyshop experience, and gotta make money to pay for everything.  I've turned wrenches for a living since '76, but never have gotten into the paint side of things, I'd rather learn and practice on a junker, not my good dodge.
The fourth photo at the start of this topic shows the low spot at bottom of fuel filler opening.  The fifth photo shows OEM fuel cutout piece from the original fender.

Phil,
I know this is an old post, but since you have both AMD and Goodmark Challenger quarters I've got a couple of questions.

I'm working on installing both AMD quarters on my 71 Chally. I have the same ugly issue with the quarter window lip area. Do you know what your body guys did to fix it? Did they section and reweld this?

Also, how about the area at the deck lid filler/dutchman seam. The AMD is a good 3/16" proud/high of the dutchman near the window and I'll have to cut the quarter panel folded lip where it goes into the window channel to bring this down. Any of these issues with yours?

Finally, is there any chance you could put a small straightedge across the dutchman panel seam to the quarter on both the AMD and Goodmark sides and post pictures of both? My AMD panels slope off greatly from the quarter/dutchman seam where as the factory originals where flat from the dutchman to the top of the quarter. I wanted to weld these seams solid, but the way they slope it would be impossible to hide the seam because there is a definite change in the panel shape/slope at the seam.

I can post pictures of the areas if needed when I get home.

Thanks! Wes

What was the deal with the huge trim hole in the AMD panel?  Has anyone else seen that in the AMD quarter panels?  Also, what was the issue with the rear window?  I'm not picking it up in the picture.  What did you do to fix it?

THANKS!
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

At the qtr window, with the door open, there is buckling at the leading edge of the qtr on both AMD and Gdmk.  The body shop obviously moved the metal, and there were not any weld seams I could feel behind the outer surfaces, so the qtrs were not cut.
At the dutchman seam, the Gdmk fit well, but the AMD was forced down such that the trunk lid is "proud" and sighting down the qtr along the trunk opening the Gdmk has a nice gentle convex arc, but the AMD is flat/concave.  This is one of my B#$^%&$^ about the fitting the shop did...its so obvious that the trunk lid stands proud on the AMD side.   Maybe this was the shops way of working around the dutchman fit problem.  They attached the dutchman to the qtrs with tack welds on the underside vertical flange, then welded the seam solid from above and ground into the weld to simulate a seam.  Looks good from the outside.
The slope off of the qtrs as measured at the middle of the seam with dutchman... I did not realize it should be flat across.  Guess I should have looked at my OEM qtrs, but I never did.  The AMD side clears the straight edge by just shy of 5/16.  On the Gdmk side the clearance is just over 3/8.  So the Gdmk is worse.  Since I'm uneducated in the OEM shape, I thought it all looked great.
Also on the AMD side the fit to the tail light panel is not correct, as if the qtr is a little short.  The shop did a crap job to cover up the error.  I ground off a good 1/4 inch thick bondo.  Then trimmed the tail light assy stud supports, so now fits a little better and no mass of bondo.
Overall in my opinion, on my car, I have to say the Gdmk qtr fit better than the AMD.  I realize everyone talks up AMD but this is my observation.   Look at the hole at back of AMD qtr next to trunk opening.  This hole is for trim attachment, but its HUGE!
The body shop was so disgusted with the BAD fit of the AMD rear bumper to the car, and bumper did not even fit AMD bumper brackets without bending the brackets.  Shop said no more AMD.
Here's a couple of pics.  Let me know if you need more.

Yea...That trim hole....I just commented on WT* were they thinking?  For dutchman issues see my previous post.
