Power increase with Six Pack?
« on: April 13, 2009 - 01:05:33 AM »
I have a 440 engine and have a single holley carb 650cfm on there. What would be the power increase if i was to switch to the 6pack setup??? Is it worth the roughly $2000???

You'd probably get more power for less money with a performer rpm intake and an 850, but personnaly I really like the 6 packs and are worth the 2k (to me). Some people claim that they are hard to tune. I have had 2 440 6 pack cars and never had a single issue tuning wise with them.

72hemi is right about the money vs power but the cool factor of the six pack is awsome. This car is me first six pack car and I love it.

I think the real power is in gas-milage. when cruisin you just use 1 two barrel...  :2cents:

It will depend on the rest of the combination, but I would guess that your 440 could use more carb than that 650 and would pick up some horsepower from more CFM even if it wasn't a 6pack.  A larger single 4 barrel will make just as much power as the six pack set up, but doesn't look nearly as cool.  Whether it is worth the money or not is a personal taste thing  -- but I personally think so.  In fact I have the six pack set up I just bought from Keith (Pistol Gripper) sitting in the back of our car on its way home right now!!

I run a 6pk  4 speed in my car.  I really enjoy having it up on top.  I myself realize I will never come in 1st place racing all the time, but just owning one and hearing it perform feels so good.  A well tuned engine and the propper 4 bbl would do just as good, but it just isn't the same when it comes to the wow factor. Also, an M1 tunnel ram works very well. I tried them before with 850's  750's  and 660's and the intake really performs great

Yep, it'll cost you but the Wow factor and the grins you get popping the hood will make it worth it.  For the 60-70's engineering, it's a pretty cool design if you think about the whole idea of the 6 pack set up.   :2cents:

Is it worth having a 6 Pak on a Plymouth since you can't call it that?

If you're lucky enough to gain 25 hp then it will cost you $80 per HP. For 2K you could get some aluminum heads assembled, a new Intake AND a camshaft kit that would easily net you 100hp. I guess it depends on if you wanna LOOK good or RUN good.  :dunno:

If you're sticking with the 4 barrel, you still have to factor in the new intake and carb, easily another $600+ when you're talking 850+ CFM, and new Eddy aluminum heads out of the box are $1,300+, and that won't get you the 100 hp gain they advertise.  You'll be over $2K to gain the extra 100+hp anyways, and you still have a 4 barrel vs 6 barrel, which is 1,300 CFM stock.  For the most part the performance gain is close to a wash for even money, but I love the 6 pack I have and will never change it.

For unknown reasons, Holley doesn't rate the CFM for 2bbl and 4bbl using the same method.  The end carbs of the 6pak have the same throttle bore and venturi as the front and rear of a 850 4bbl yet they get a rating of 500+500=1000.

The stock 6 pak on a stock motor is worth about what the factory says. 15 more hp than a cast iron Intake with a AVS. Mostly because the stock AVS was too small. I'd guess it would be a toss-up if you just bolted a 800 Thunder AVS in it's place.

The six barrel is a great street induction for mildly modified and heavy modified engines. but, it has it's limitations as noted. Cost is a big one, but IMO the only way to get a good 6bbl is either know the guy the owns it now, or buy it new. There are a lot of "buying others' problems" deals on used 6bbls. At least buy new carbs. The RB 6bbl is a very good induction, capable of slightly past 500hp. But if you want the most power from an engine, the better single four intakes will make more power when properly matched. The LA 6bbls are very restrictive compared to a good single 4bbl. Total CFM is 1390 dry flowed, about 1000cfm wet.

When I switched from a thermoquad to a sixpack, I almost sh*t my self the first time I dumped the clutch. Since you are going from 650cfm to 1350cfm, I would think you will notice it. In fact, the center 2bbl is 650cfm alone. But like everyone else has already said, it just looks so dang cool!
