Help me identify this mystery 1970 Dodge Challenger.....
« on: April 13, 2009 - 02:21:38 PM »
Let me give you the back story first....

A man in his late 50's has a run down welding businessabout 3 mile from my house.  In fact the property and buildings on it look abandoned.  It's been that way every since I can remember, and I'm 29 years old.  On his property are dozens of classic GM, Ford, and one or two 60's Baracudas.  Quite a few cars are also in a fenced in area.

Anyways about 3 years ago while drivng by I saw the rear end of a yellow 1970 Dodge Challenger with a "Go Wing" rear spoiler.  Most of car can't be seen from the road as it is blocked by trees and other cars.

So I decided to stop and take a look at the car and get some pictures.

I couldn't look at the VIN as it was blocked by junk on the dashboard, there were also no call out labels on the hood (they are missing) so no way of knowing what engine.  I would normally talk to the guy who has these cars on his lot and ask him about the car, but he's a bit of a recluse, with no phone number.  There are also many houses around the property so I don't know where exactly he lives.

The Car clearly has custom striping as the stripes on it are not from the factory.

So I have a few questions....

1.  What are the chances that this is an R/T Challenger?  It does have the power buldge hood.  If you look at the pics closely you can see three tiny holes on the hood where the call out engine logo would be.  Would base model Challengers have that as well?

2.  The car is yellow, so I would assume it's one of the high impact colors FY1 Banana?

3.  I haven't looked inside the car, but from the pictures it appears to have a tan interior, with the high back seats (not sure if they are buckets or if it's a bench seat).  Also the steering wheel seems to match the color of the seats.  How many Challengers came with the tan interior?

As I stated earlier it does have the 70 "Go Wing."  Sorry I don't have the picture of the "Go Wing" as I accidently deleted it on my digitial camera, but it is a 70 "Go Wing" of that I'm sure.

4.  How many Challengers had the "Go Wing?"  I've read it was a dealer option, are the any base model Challengers with the "Go Wing?"  I have many issues of Mopar magazines and I've never seen a base model Challenger with a "Go Wing."

If I could only look at the VIN # I wouldn't have to ask but the VIN# is blocked.  I guess I'll have to look through the windows and see if the car has a pistol grip shifter.

So what do you think?  Is it a base model Challenger with the custom stripe, or an R/T with custom striping?

Without the VIN it's pretty much impossible to say what it is.  Could be anything from a 198 /6 fixed window car to a 426 Hemi car.  No way to tell without a closer examination. Especially since your a talking about a 40 year old car that clearly has had some "customizing" done to it.

i say... ask around the area, say you need some welding done. someones gotta know the guy.
just get your foot in the door, then you can ask him honestly.
who knows, maybe its for sale, maybe not. perhaps theres a cool story, or some fabled history to be heard.

just my  :2cents:

I was going to say the same thing...The first photo looked way too much like a 'Cuda's Rally hood. ;)

I don't see a header panel on it so it looks to be a Challenger......possibly a 70   :clueless:
I think the side view of the hood with the hood stripes makes it look like a Cuda.......but I see a definite R/T hood there.

Also, I do not see any definitive point/edge, (in the circle) like the Barracuda has.

Visit your local town hall, and ask about the property at that address. You should be able to get the owner information as it is public record. You should be able to get in touch with the owner, or a relative at the very least.

Thanks for the blow up pics. R/Thedkace.

First off, cool pics!  Thanks for the pics, Equalizer.  Did you have permission to go on his property?  Be careful,  a person like this may have a loaded shot gun waiting by the door.  :roflsmiley:  :stirpot:

Ok, here's my 2 cents.  It's a 70 Challenger in factory Top Banana with custom '71 style side stripes with a V8.  A lot can happen in 30+ years though.....

Here's my take: Definately a Challenger Power Bulge hood.  Look at the rear end of the raised portion of the scoop in front of where the vents would be, which now have leaves in the vents.  Very Challenger like.

Front shot shows a little of the headlight trim='70.  Front valance/bumper is missing exposing radiator support that has Top Bannana yellow with potentially the factory black out on the radiator support.

Hood scoop inserts for Power Bulge hood is missing.  Look carfully.  :sly:  I might be dreaming but look into the hole where the insert would be.  Is that potentially 1 of 2 Carter AFB carbs in that hole?  From the angle that you can see the carb, if it is the carb, that is not a /6, it's a V8 with

possible 2 AFB carbs= POTENTIALLY a 426 HEMI engine!!!!  (OK, maybe I'm on drugs..  :screwy: but hey, I can dream!!!!)

Looked at the second pic again.  Again, if that is the carb through the hole, it's too far forward to be a single carb set up, that's why it looks like a 2 carb set up.  They din't have those on factory 440's, etc.  Only the Hemi.  :2cents:

Looks like an a/c compressor to me.  Also, someone obviously cut out the area of the hood where the factory inserts go so it probably has a decent sized engine in there...

Thanks for all the info guys, I appreciate it.  The Challenger was only about 10 feet from the road way, so I ran up got pics and got out of there.  On an old barn nearby is a "NO TRESPASSING" sign.  I'm not the type of guy to trespass on peoples property but I had to get pics of this Challenger.  Occassionally I drive by and I can still see the rear end of the car with the "Go Wing" from the road, so it's still there.
