How long will this last?

I just dug up some info on the 71 Chally that has the 318 with twin turbos making an incredible 745rwhp at 18psi of boost. Talked to the guy that built it and he confirms it is a stock block. They wanted to use an R3 block but couldn't find one. That is freaking awesome for a 318 based engine, however I have to wonder how long this engine last before it blows apart??? :dunno:

I would think that with forged internals and arp fasteners it should hold together quite well.  If it was making that kind of power with spray, not very long.  Spray "shocks" the engine and turbos apply power more smoothly, making it easier on the engine.  Just my   :2cents:

Thats good input concidering that I want to do a simular set up to my 340 stroker. He told me that system was around 15k! Being a mechanic and seeing that set up I believe I could build a simular system for under 5k. Looks very straight forward as far as turbo systems go.

If the bores are thick, and some 318s are much thicker than they get credit for, it should last decently well. Turbo supplied boost is not very hard on internals compared to supercharging or chemical supercharging (NOS). The R3 would have had more meat in the mains and better decks for sealing. But if it was all done right, that's not a grenade waiting for the pin to be pulled.

The biggest problem is holding the heads on the block under boost with 4 head bolts. I didn't know there was a shortage of R-3 blocks   :clueless:

Yeah I talked to Mike who works there. I'm conviced I'm going to do a turbo set up. Might stick with a single 76mm. That will be alot easier to do and will still make huge power. Not your kinda of power but good enough for me. :bigsmile: :bigsmile:

What about the casting webs by the main caps? Mopars are tought little motors but if its making an HONEST 745 REAR WHEEL HP what is that like 800 HP at the motor..come on. Common sense says something is going to break.

On a side note, I was surprise today to see my little 318 at 6500 rpms--and holding in third gear before backing off but its not making 400 HP I far as I can guess...some would say it is thou.

Who cares. As plentiful as 318s are, you just bolt another one up underneath the turbos and go.

Anything is possible I guess. I've seen the cylinders on several 360's collapse with far less HP and cylinder pressure than a Turbo car has. If and when it does give it up you just hope it don't dump a few gallons of antifreeze on the back tires at 130mph. Boosted cars car be unpredictable. I saw TWO of them barrel roll going through the traps at Cecil a few years back at the same race when they blew in high gear. A beautiful 60's box Nova and a fox Mustang. Both had Pro-chargers and were running the 10.5 tire class. The Nova looked like it came out of a car crusher when it went out on a flatbed. I doubt that the driver survived. That was just before they changed the rules and made them run 1/8 mile instead of 1/4. Probably a better plan would to start with a good race block. It makes little sense to plow machine shop money into an old stock block for an application like that when they are available. It will take out more than just the cheap engine block when it expires. :grinyes:

Some guys are making stock blocks live, I imagine that it is all in the tune....still sounds iffy making that kind of power with a stock block.
I agree with 71chally416 on investing all the machine shop money into a stock block for this application.
