318 w/ 904 shifts too quick...
« on: April 16, 2009 - 09:00:22 PM »
I just put an Edelbrock Intake and a Holley 570 on my 1970 318. I've got the 904 Transmission, it wants to shift way early and it won't downshift when I stomp on the gas pedal.
I had this problem before I changed the Carb and Intake, but I cured it by moving the linkage to the Tranny all the way to the rear position. I've made the same adjustment with my new set up, but the carb and linkage positions are much different with the new set up. It there some other way to get it to shift at higher RPM's and also downshift when I put the hammer down?
Please keep in mind that I'm real green when it comes to this stuff.
I really appreciate any help!
THANKS!

This might be hard to see, but my solution was to put a small bolt behind where the carb stud attached to the kick-down linkage.

If you run it with insufficent throttle pressure you'll burn it up so get it fixed!

I think I found the problem, it looks like the throttle cable is behind the tranny linkage and it may be stopping the tranny linkage from moving to the rear so it can do it's job. So I re-routed the throttle cable to be in front of the tranny linkage.
I also extended the slot on the tranny linkage (drilled a hole at the end of the slot, then used a dremel tool to bring the slot and the hole together creating a longer slot) where it bolts to the throttle linkage/bracket, so I also adjusted the tranny linkage back a hair.....
I'm going for a test drive, I can stop at the grocery store and get some Vodka while I test drive the new linkage set up!

It still shifts a little earlier than I'd like, but it does down shift when I stand on it...................
Are there any adjustments beside the linkage?

The best thing to do in these situations is post some pics of your carb/linkage set up.
