Re-Body???
« on: April 16, 2009 - 10:46:14 PM »
I have a question for the restoration experts, and im sorry if this has been asked and answered before.
What constitutes a re-body?  What got me wondering was Barrett Jackson, i was watching the other night and they had a car that they claimed was a re-body,  So what is the difference between a "re-body" and an illeagal vin swap?  Cause they are kinda the same thing.. arent they?

As far as I know a re-body is taking the vin and tag from one vehicle and putting them on another that is in much better shape. It is 100% illegal too.

:horse: I think this has been brought up too many times, and it always ends in a pissing match.  There are too many variables and definitions for the layman (90% of the general populous) to make an informed opinion.  We all have our ideas, but obviously it's not 100% illegal because it has been done before and has been publicized.  There is a rather lengthy thread on Moparts about a 65 something or other (Belvedere I think) where a donor car became the original, and it's been through all the big shows and won many awards with everyone knowing full well what it was.  There are ways to do it right, and ways that are illegal.  If you ever come across one, just make sure everything is legit and ask lots of questions up front.

several years ago a case went to the supreme court over a million dollar plus car early 1900s car it was just over 10% original the sale stood up in court as the real car . this would have been a different outcome if another car with the same body #s would show up . :horse:

I think the "rebody" on B-J was a camaro that had the sheet metal replaced with that from a later body camaro. It would be like putting 70 Cuda metal on a 74. Legit. Not what is commonly called a rebody on this forum.
