HELP ~ Parking Brake Cable Install
« on: April 19, 2009 - 03:36:05 PM »
First, thanks to those who pointed me in the right direction for buying the parking brake kit... came it yesterday.. what a great product..

but.. now i need some help...

I got the whole kit installed.. and the s hook was a *$#&... but it seems like once i got the hook installed.. it engaged the parking brake... and i barely have the J hook on... attached are a few pics i took... off the rear drum, to see if the brake is in fact engaged.. (Note: the foot brake is NOT on..).. the s and J hooks to see if i installed them correctly...

if the posts don't work for reason, the pics are in the library in the link below..

Based on other pics I've seen I think the S hook is in the wrong location. I think it goes is the little round hole in the bottom of tranny mount

thanks wade..

I'll fix that.. no problem..

but it seems like there is too much tension on the line and it's engaging the brake..

I've got to be doing something wrong.. i just don't know what..

argh..  :banghead:

I was just thinking that if the S hook is pulling, like in the pic., there is some slack to be gained by moving it back... Sorry but my S hook is long gone so I'm not sure on the proper location.

You sure you have the right length J hook?  It looks like yours is out all the way, I have about an inch of thread on the tip of mine.  Mine was actually about 4 inches short and for a B-body.  When I got the right length one everything worked fine.  Although the driver's side brake sometimes sticks, but thats another problem...

I had a thread about it here

thanks scatterbrain...

i'll check that out when i get home from work...

but while i'm thinking about it.. i also had a heck of time putting in the clips in the for the rear cables.. they broke... i'll try to get some pics of the actual break.. the center popped out of the clip....hmmm at first i thought it was supposed to do it.. it was that clean of a cut.. but i don't think its right...

any thoughts?

thanks...

Looks like something is off. my crossmember is out but the cable is still under the car and i've got at least 3 in of thread showing and when i pulled on the cable were the j hook would have been it looked liked yours would be fine. What year is your car i could go out and measure my threaded rod to see if yours is too short.

Ok Ok Ok!

I finally got home from work and was able to check a few things out.

J Hook

*First, my J hook is 18" Long
*The equalizer peice is upside down and I'll fix that.
*The nut on the hook is where it is at so i could hook it up, it would need to be tightened, once i get the tension problem fixed.

S Hook
* The S hook can easily be fixed, and might help my tension problem, but looking the pic in the manuel, it looks like how it goes (see pic below or in link sent by scatterbrain.. anybody with some pics to show me otherwise?

Even if i fix both of those, the tension will be the same, and the brakes still engaged..

Also are you sure the parking brake lever is all the way up?  Just asking.

I was thinking connect everything & work the e-brake pedal... you might stretch the cable a little

wow.. thanks to all that replied.. my head has been spinning trying to figure this thing out...

tom great pic.. thanks...

To get some of the info, i'm going to have to take everything back apart.. reluctantly... trying to avoid it..

take a look at the pic of the rear drum.. is the brake engaged or am i wrong?.. the reason i think it is because i can't seem to get the housing over the drum brakes... they are expanded... are they are bear to get on or is it just me... or is the brake on...

the pedal is diffently all the way up.. i've checked it a few times.. but.. as hooked up now.. it does work.. meaning i can press it (about half way).. and feels like it's setting the brake and then releasing it when it should...

that being said, this is my first car i'm doing, so alot of this stuff is new to me so bear with me.. ha..

thanks guys..

I had the same problem with my new e brake setup.  I ended getting a "nut extension" (not certain if that is the offical word, but it is like a 3" long nut) and some threaded rod from the hardware store to extend the j hook.  Gave me enough cable slack to make everything fit.  If the cable stretches I can remove the extension.
