Any audio/visual experts-need tv help!
« on: April 19, 2009 - 06:31:42 PM »
Just bought a new Samsung LCD 52" tv but have a couple questions/problems.First off we are not at all happy with the picture quality at home even though it looked great in the store. The picture is blurry, not crisp and there seems to be shadows on everything.Second problem is it doesn`t seem to recognize my DVD player.I hooked it up using component cables but it says -no device detected.I do have sound thru both my home theater and dvd thru the home theater suround sound.Did we buy the wrong tv for picture quality or is it my Dish signal and why won`t my dvd work?    :pullinghair:

How are you hooking up to the TV?  The best way with High Def is to use the HDMI port.  You should have a couple of these inputs on your TV?  I will be on for a while if you need or you can buzz me at 301.237.7078 and I will help you as best i can

First off, make sure all co-ax cables are tight going to the TV.

For the DVD problem, on your menu, you should see video 1, video2, video3. I'm just using my experience thru a Panasonic TV.

Hey dude both of my HD TV's are Samsung LCD's and I Love them both.

If you are getting a bad picture it could be the signal. The TV you bought shoudln't have any problem with picture.

What resolution is it? Do you have the HD service through Dish? Also, unless you have an HD cable such as HDMI or HD Component you are not going to get an HD picture. If you are using a coax cable you will not get a great picture.

On the DVD player, it could be any number of things.

I'm kind of a nerd when it comes to this stuff so I should be able to help. I know someone else already put their number on here but I'll put mine as well. You can call me if you want and I'll be glad to help walk you through setting it up. I know these type of TV's are a big investment and I don't want you to think you made a mistake.

My name is Kevin and my number is 940-859-3184. I'll be glad to help over the phone or you can just reply on here and I'll see if I can't figure out your problem.

One thing though, on some signals such as Component or HDMI the TV will not recognize it unless that device is actually on. I have to turn on my PS3 before I can switch it to the HDMI input. Hope this helps.

Ok the dvd is now working fine and has a good picture (I hooked it up wrong I)so I`m think it`s just my Dish connection which is just a coax cable. The cable box does not have an HDMI connection so I probably nede a different box but the tv model is a LN52A650A and just says LCD TV so is it HD or not?

Based on your model number, it is HD.  You need to get an HD box and cables for your Dish.  The picture will definitely not look as good with the coax, but if there are shadows, then check how well the ends are connected.  They might be loose.

Glad it works for you. Once you get HD Dish you will notice a huge difference on the HD channels. The channels that aren't HD though will not look as good, so don't expect every channel to look HD.

On your DVD player, it will be a good picture, but in order to see a true HD movie you will have to get a BluRay player. They are getting cheaper, but they are still about $250. You will see a huge difference in DVD and BluRay discs. That is especially true for computer animated movies such as "Cars" or "Ratatouille". They look excellent on BluRay.

The biggest thing to remember though is that only shows and actual movies that were filmed in HD will look HD on your TV. In other words, a show that was filmed in the 80's is not gonna look near as good as a show that was filmed using HD cameras in this century. So don't get aggravated if you are watching "All in the Family" (it's just an example) and it doesn't look HD. They will still look better than a regular CRT tv but HD shows look way better.

Thats a great model, being it supports 1080p and is a 120Hz LCD. Not sure if it supports 1080p/24 or not but BluRays will look look great on it as well as live HD broadcasts regardless.

Component video can also support 1080p HD siganl. So if you have the RGB colored ports that use RCA style jacks, you should use them. HDMI is a "johnny come lately" in the HD world and supports 5.1 and 7.1 digital audio over the same interface.

I bought a 65" Panasonic plasma and just hung it on the wall a couple of weeks ago. Is about 180 lbs. Every time I walk by it I think it's gonna fall it was so heavy. Aside from that, am really happy with it. Am working on my projector and screen now

A good friend of mine has a Movie room in his house with a 115" projector wall. The projector is 720p also. It's freaking huge. He has awesome Polk speakers and a Harmon Kardon reciever too. It's awesome. Playing Halo on that screen is sweet. The crosshairs are a foot wide!

Awesome.  I'm not huge into movies, but games I like to play.  Not obsessed, but I like to play.   :icon16:
