Dont know why...
« on: April 20, 2009 - 09:43:40 PM »
but this burns me up. There is a guy selling a 70 Pike Peak car on ebay. He goes on and on ranting about this car that as far I could tell never really won anything and now is a worn out rag. What really got me is when he states this:

The nose and tail panels were cut out, and replaced with a current year grille and tail section to comply with the “3 year old” rule that stipulated only current model year cars could enter the Pikes Peak race.  This was the major reason the car was forgotten later in its career, as it was actually mistaken for a worthless 73 Cuda.  Body stampings, the 70 only spec headliner mounts, and the filled in side markers (visible from inside only) were the keys to uncovering its true history.

Maybe it just me but if your an e-body lover you would never call any year model "worthless". What an arrogant ass!

What's the fuss  :clueless: ?  It's a real Hemi car that was raced on Pikes Peak.  This has been posted before, and it's actually quite an interesting history.  There are several members that have even seen it raced before.

It might have an interesting history, but I dont like the fact that state that a 73 is worthless. I guess its the way he put it.

...because to quite a few people muscle cars died with the introduction of the 1972 model year. It is the same attitude that I've seen and overhead from people wonder out loud why anyone would want to waste time restoring an A body. These are the same people who have such a narrow view of muscle car correctness, that they will only settle on and be happy with a select few cars they feel are right, which are 68-71 big blocks with some special feature to them. 383 cars are not included in the group as they are too run of the mill.

I say fine. that means lower prices and greater availbility of other models for the rest of us.

I too understand this general feeling. All too often I catch myself having to explain to curious onlookers that mine is not a 70/71 and that it was not offered with a "Hemi" just to see a look of dismay on their face. However I feel that if a 72-74 Cuda had a well documented race history, although far from a Hemi value, would be worth some money. Calling a certain vintage car "worthless" I feel is in very bad taste and rude to say the least.

True. Even more pedestrian cars have value, albeit maybe less.

I personally loved the fact that when I had my Aspen R/T, which was looked down on by even more people than the post 72 cars, I would listen to the crap about how my car was junk and not worth anything, blah, blah, blah, and my restored whatever is bigger, badder, and worth more. So I'd ask them to run up against my "lowley" F body to school me on how a "real" muscle car was supposed to run. I'd then proceed to rip off a low 12 second e.t., smoke them by a second and half, and then conceed that yeah, your date code correct, restored hemi carbs probably cost more than my entire car and I'm sure your tune up is off a little which is why you couldn't keep up.

That is the key. I admit I'm sometimes a little disgusted by how some supposed "Musclecars" perform at the track. It's decades later now and they should run better than in 1970 or 73. There'll always be someone with a nicer paint job and a more factory correct car than me, but it's hard to look good when you get your ass drug at the track. Where's the Muscle?  :dunno:

I was guilty of this once, but I got an education. I have a '69 Cutlass S with a pretty nasty 455 in it and 4 speed and 3.90 gears. A guy in a Gremlin came up behind me running at about 55. I picked it up to about 70 so that I could downshift into third and be in the meat of the motor thinking I'd waste him. :grinno: :nono:  He ate my lunch proper.  A lot of humble pie and thumbs up to him and I went home. After that I never judge any book by its cover. A muscle car to me is any American iron with any nasty engine in it. :2thumbs:
Don't look back, I might be gaining on you.

I dont think the owner had any ill will in his ad . the car was thought to be a turd .at least he researched the car rather than dump it .i actually helped him in finding a few details like the 70 only e brake routing and he was very gracious in his emails . nice guy his only fault was he found a few thin skinned 72 and up owners . im sure if asked he would send an e hug . :bananasmi
