Purple Cam Question
« on: April 21, 2009 - 08:56:27 AM »
The previous owner of my 340 Challenger said that he installed a purple cam.  What are the specs of this cam?  Does that cam require solid or hydraulic lifters or doesn't it matter?  How can I tell what I have?  Thanks

No telling which purple stripe cam he used. The purple shaft cam line is a group of camshafts not just one. 284/284 is a popular grind but again, there is no way to know without the cam card or pulling it and looking at the nose.

Open a valve cover and put pressure on the pushrods. If one sinks at all it's a hyrdralic cam and that will narrow things down.

you can put a dial guage on the valve & measure valve lift , that will narrow it down a lot

You want to put the dial indicator on the lifter.. use a spare pushrod or a 1/4" long extension with the rockers removed. Otherwise the lifter will compress under the valve spring's force. it shows less lift than what it should at that point.

Since it's a hydraulic cam and lifter package, how about let's just get close to the specs. Basically there are only three cams available in this range so answering these questions should get a good consensus opinion.

What else is modified on your cars engine?

 How does the car idle?

Is it easily drivable around town?

How does the power seem when accelerating hard?
 Slowly then a burst or
 Strong yet smooth?

A spec sheet should be available here just try a search using "purple shaft cam".

It's probably the "Hemi grind". That worked good enough to do 109mph with my 318 so it'll work fine. The slightly larger .484" lift is not much different and the .509" lift is pretty nasty. You need compression and a good convertor to use that one.

1. The car doesn't appear to be modified that much.  It's punched 30 over.

2. The cars idles great.  I replaced the Thermoquad with a 625 Road Demon.

3. It's easy to drive and the engine seems to be very strong.  However the P.O. had the 727 rebuilt with a shift kit.  Apparently he spent a lot on the rebuild.  But he installed a 3500 stall.  I have no idea why such a big stall.  I'm going to be installing a TKO 600 5 speed so I will be selling the trans along with everything attached to it.

Keep'em coming guys thanks
